The agony of boat building

Postby MadAlice » Sun Oct 25, 2009 12:44 pm

So less than a week ago (I think), I decided I would get no more progress without a boat. There's no wood to be had west of RoB where I set up my camp, without a boat to cross the river. I spent 3 days walking east, chopping a tree, and walking back to my camp with one log at a time, and FINALLY made a boat. Then I immediately made all the other stuff I needed, wood now being plentiful on the other side of the river. A loom, a spinning wheel, tanning tubs...finally I was starting to get somewhere.

I was away yesterday and didn't know about the massive server crash, and this morning I see there's been a rollback. Urrrrrrrrgh.

If I'm correct in saying I built that boat less than a week ago, I don't suppose anyone has one they could lend? I can't face hiking around the lake with one log at a time for another 3 days.

... Why didn't you just build the boat at the forest, lift it, and travel back to your hearthfire?

I had travel sickness I couldn't get rid of because I couldn't make a bed!

So why didn't you build the boat over there and drag that back instead? As opposed to carrying 10 logs one by one.

I guess I was afraid I'd get killed again if I stood over there long enough to cut all the wood and make the boat. Some numbnuts had just been around repeatedly killing a bunch of us newbs right before that. Not standing alone in the middle of a deserted forest seemed like a good idea at the time.

Right, and making 10 trips at crawl speed towards the travel point of every other player in the game while holding a giant signal over your head is a completely safe alternative.

Well, the person that was attacking newbies is long since dead, so how you want to do it is up to you.

I'm not sure I even care at this point. I spent all my LP for about a week and a half establishing a claim, and thought that happened more than a week ago, but apparently not. It's all gone. Can't decide whether to hike off to some better spot and start all over again or just sit here and eat up all the carrots and onions and log out.

If you pm me privately and tell me where you are I will bring you a boat.

Near to RoB is a difficult place to live. The advantages of being near a trading point and being able to put your hearth somewhere else as a mobile porting spot are perhaps outweighed by the severe shortage of resources and the amount of casual traffic. I would advise using the boat to move further out and resettle.

But I would be happy to bring you the transportation you need. I'll check my pm's periodically today.

Oh, and eating onions is a bad thing, don't do it.
