Stupid, costly mistake with no gain.

So a few days ago I happened across a rather new player. Gave them my farming hat as it was the only thing I could readily replace on me. Wished them luck & was on my way. A while later I decided to give them stuff, including a full box & full table. And had the materials for a chair. He was offline & asleep, I could tell, and hadn't kinned him. Trespassed to put the gifts in a slightly safer spot. And started to build a chair. Stupid me, I forgot that build signs leave a vandalism scent regardless of putting stuff in/out.

Thankfully I had ranging active, so I immediately realized my mistake & moved my hearthfire out of the wilderness. And prayed.
Unfortunately, my (low-population) village was shortly raided. Friend warped in on his foraging alt after a long time in the field, was promptly murdered. Informed me, we left the game alone for a while.

Interesting, there seems to be a story that happened here.
First of all, my character is alive for some reason. (And still is atm.) I was clearly summoned & attacked, as my health was at 1. My forge ring & monocle (and that murdered alt's monocle) stolen, and hearthfire broken. But why was I not murdered, which was clearly an option?
To answer that, we found unaccounted for assault scents. They were not in the basement my hearthfire was located, nor at the location the alt was killed. Near as I can tell, a random passer-by (or possibly a second tracker) happened upon the breach in our wall & started to explore the village before my character was able to be killed. They entered the basement when I was being attacked, and the attacker decided this second person was higher priority. There was a chase back outside the wall, where poor Random was killed next to his boat. We found a new corpse next to a new (badly damage) boat that fits this story, though were unable to locate the murder scent to confirm.

After disposing of Random, his killer discovered that my character was no longer online. As I only left the single scent, he may have summoned me on the last charge or dropped it after the summon. (Or do they vanish automatically upon a summon? Yet to do so.) In any case, I imagine he broke my hearthfire to summon me elsewhere at his leisure. He then raided the village, and it was during this (we think) that my friend's alt warped in.

The (large amount of) items taken do not bother me, aside from the monocles & the ~q120s(?) pickaxe we had. Mainly I feel guilty my friend's alt was killed for my mistake.
At this point the scent has faded; decided to defer posting about it until I was sure I had survived.

Is there any chance of either unidentified person confirming how things went?
