Cyrillic shenaninags

Postby gogis » Mon Jul 08, 2013 11:13 am

I am fairly new to this game, 2 weeks in and out, came after the thread on bay12.

I was surprised to found out huge amount of players here from russia (I am one also) but decided to play as a hermit, I don't really want to commit myself to anything before I know things. Or ever.
What is surprising, though - in couple of weeks I randomly encountered half dozen of players bitching around and trying to gank me in hilarious ways, shooting very borked russian profanities in cyrillic, obviously online translated. Same with numerous stones I found, engraved with some seriously fun shit.
I am totally missing something here. Is it some previous worlds history, or running gag, or some vileful intent - please enlighten me.

Some people are afraid of Russians because they are... Russian?
And other people take advantage of that by pretending they are Russian to intimidate their prey.

Russians have been labeled as bloodthirsty savages that will kill anyone that isn't one of them. It's probably just a few bad apples that spoil the bunch but a general rule of thumb is to avoid anyone Russian because of it. People go so far as to copy/paste Google translations to either insult or scare others. I have had several instances where I was attacked out of nowhere by some random stranger, and only when I copy/pasted друг did they stop attacking me (which reinforces the stereotype that Russians will not attack their own kind.)

Don't get me wrong, there are some pretty cool people who are Russian - but I don't stick around for long when someone starts typing in Cyrillic.

That is one of the most ingenious tips ever. I think you just raised my chances to survive in this crazy world.
"Our village is so big, you can hop on a wagon at the idol and ride it all day in the same direction, and you'll still be on our claim"
"Dang, are your wagons that slow?"

Actually now I think I should hide my origins cuz chances of KoS is also risen, right? Crazy shit imo. It's actually weird that this kind of game is even popular in Russia, guess I was wrong all the way. Although I am aware that UO and earlier on pvp MUDs was crazy popular, so it's can be these people. (Not like I have anything against MUDs or UO, I was fervent mudder in past too)

It runs on linux which is a lot more widespread in Russia, it requires very low bandwidth (huge parts of Russia have shitty infrastructure) and isn't very demanding on your PC. That's my theory anyway.

Russians can be pretty cool if you know their language and so far i met only friendly russians. Can't say same for polish people, my friend survived the encounter with them only because he lives in country near Poland.

Rofl, my drunken buddies are quite silly when it comes to americans. I was by a river just walking by, when I saw a group of them boating with a raft behind.
This was the only small ounce of conversation I could snatch before they fast was gone.
''i can't wait to kill him''
''lol im gonna shove vodka shards up on those 'murican's vaginas.''
''lolmao''

Gave me a fucking crack there.

Where you get all information? :) Everybody and their granny have 20-100Mbit ethernetz and sporting macbooks and such (I am not talking just Moscow) It's 2013 already. Your theory is outdated, sorry
