Anyone doing this?

1. Make a mine hole near something valuable like a foraging ground or a node.
2. Dig out below a bit
3. Set up a village idol and if necessary, a bwall, whatever facilities you want.
4. Leave your hearth fire above ground.
5. Destroy mine hole.

....

Providing you don't leave scents, and you have a backup plan in case your hearth fire is destroyed, it seems to me like a great way for a hermit/forager/miner/hunter to have a safe base that nobody will find and mess with.

Provide a way to have crops and animals underground and I'd never have to see the surface ever again!

Dang, an underground city? Now THAT would be awesome, provided you can live on whatever you can catch on the surface (and the occasional troll meat)
"Our village is so big, you can hop on a wagon at the idol and ride it all day in the same direction, and you'll still be on our claim"
"Dang, are your wagons that slow?"

Think I'd have to have a vclaim above ground with a brickwall around my HF and a xroad out. Too much risk of some one coming by just to jack with "some noob" and destroying the HF. (In which case you wouldn't need your HF above ground, anyway, as you could just link to the xroad.) Other than having a nearby cave entrance, I can't think of another good way to prevent this scenario.

why stop at only cave level?

Go to cave, pave a nice long road and make a fake mine area.

minehole x4 to get to L5

destroy upper mineholes.

You would preferably want a maintained village for surface porting. even knocking out xroads won't stop much since you can use alts to port back and forth.

I would do it to as long as we could have crops underground. Maybe give us ability to move thousands of dirt items to convert just a few farming tiles on mined out tiles.

Giving us the ability to terraform with a near incredible effort to accomplish.

Well you could have just a farm vclaim near the river. go there do farming + you get nice access to the water fast.

Well sevenless, you could always ask Jorb and Loftar very kindly to give us assorted Mushroom Mycelium spawn! (Such as DF-inspired HnH Original Plump Helmet Spawn for the wine, Dimple cup Spawn for the dye, Pig Tail seeds for ze ale, rocknuts for the endless quarry bush roast, sweetpod seed for that sweet Jar of dirt AHERM rum, and Cave wheat seeds for the beer.)

*Kicks a boulder* But ve cannot have copyrighted things.

EDIT: Unless Disregard whole parody of DF and be serious with Sevenless's "Fungiculture!" Hohoho truly dwarven indeed, best thing since sliced magma bread.
