Learning NoSQL

Postby Patchouli_Knowledge » Fri Sep 06, 2013 6:23 pm

Does any one have a suggestion on where would be the best place for someone that wants to start learning NoSQL? This is one of the requirement for a job that someone is willing to offer to me. I have some coding experience but not in regards to NoSQL. Also learning PHP (I hear it is an easy language to learn) is a plus but a secondary goal rather than a primary. Thank you for your time.

I once started to learn PHP & HTML just from internet tutorials, it worked pretty well if you really do it, maybe you will find something for NoSQL aswell.

I always start with the Wikipedia entry and follow links from there. I reason that those that really want their information accessible will make sure that their wiki page is in order with good links. I pulled it up and it looks like a few decent intros linked at the bottom along with papers.

First I've heard of the tech, though, and looks interesting. (Bad acronym, though. I thought it might get away from SQL entirely. :( ) It might just fill a need for something I've been working on off and on better than the other data solution I was looking at.
Opinions expressed in this statement are the authors alone and in no way reflect on the game development values of the actual developers.

If you'd know what they use you might look for focussed books ...

free - read it a while back but stopped bothering with DBs ;)

good luck!!!

I googled up and saw that pdf file myself but I think I need to look up wiki or other sources to know the full extent of what NoSQL is considering that I neer dealt with SQL or PHP is as well. The only thing I have remotely close is knowing some HTML.

Set up a Xampp http://www.apachefriends.org/en/xampp.html on your PC, good way to learn and experiment with php, MySQL and such

Attention:
The default configuration is not good from a security point of view and it's not secure enough for a production environment - please don't use XAMPP in such environment.

NoSQL ???, never heard of that. ... reading up a bit.

Seems NoSQL is related to big (really big!) and very particular data processing (storage & querying)
As such, I think to learn NoSQL, you also need to learn about the particular database systems they seem to use in relation to this NoSQL (query?) language. (that kinda means you need to see if you can setup/install such a database system, with NoSQL support of course.)

Erm. You got a big leap to make.
... No HnH for you if you going for that job. ;)

Note: Considering more and more data is collected & stored (across different systems/servers) this NoSQL thing might become a interested skill to have.

http://webandphp.com/IntroductiontoDocu ... ithMongoDB

webandphp.com wrote:By now most you will probably have heard of the term NoSQL. It's a vague term that covers a lot of different types of database engines. The main classes of NoSQL databases are key/value stores, column databases, graph databases and document databases. Examples of a key/value stores are memcache or Redis, where data can only be stored and retrieved through a specific key. Column databases, such as Cassandra and Hadoop, are great for processing large amounts of data. Graph databases such as Neo4j and OrientDB model the relations between entities. Apache CouchDB and MongoDB belong to the last category, Document databases. We will be looking extensively at MongoDB in this article.
