I'm trapped in my camp! Derails but good discussion

I don't even bother putting up a palisade until I have a village idol. Of course with the new cost of crossroads this isn't feasible anymore either. :(

Usually if I'm in a small group, I'll make more than one gate, and give a key to one gate to whomever else I'm living with (ideally 1 gate per player in your village). This allows them to manage their gates as needed, and if you get raided from an empty gate you know who was at fault. Of course the more gates and key users, the more security holes you have, but that's the price you pay for having walls (I hate walls in general).

It's not hard to start mining from the beginning.
The trick is in finding iron.
Elvenia had a steel production and brickwall a day or two after we had a village claim.
Edit: Nope I'm wrong, that was world beginning. Trick is in trading now.

Nobody brought up brick walls or acquiring metal. My dislike for walls is just in general because the gate and key mechanics are usually just as disruptive for the people the walls are supposed to "protect" as they are for any potential raiders. Keys as a mechanic are clunky and unsafe, and the only way to really use keys in a safe and effective manner is to multi-client the game with a dedicated gatekeeper hearthling (an aspect that could, and should, be abstracted to the gate structures themselves).

Well what do you think about the salem gate system, where each key is bound to it's owner, and nobody else can use that key.

Personally I prefer crossroads to that.

I never got a beta invite so I never played it (was too paranoid it might be a pay to play game so I avoided it sadly). :(

I think gates should be permission and authority based.

if you have brickwall, there's no excuse to not have crossroads - it's only 1 steel and a few extra iron bars.

if you have a vidol and palisade, you can probably buy crossroad metals for a couple pearls, bluebells etc.

if you don't have a vidol, or are unwilling or unable to trade for cr metals, the next best idea is to build a battering ram before you need it. or at the very least, have all materials (including lumber) on hand inside your palisade.

all that being said, the metal requirement for crossroads is fucking retarded and great example of loftar's "screw it, slap some duct tape on there" mentality

100% agreed.
People spam scents?
Make scents damage you.
Crossroads being used as defense?
Make them expensive.

That's assuming you dont have assholes going around detroying any cr, banner, or statue they find with animals.. Gets pricey when you have to keep rebuilding it.
