The game world is huge. You can walk for hours upon hours and not see anyone.

No, the game isn't dead. We're at the same population as we were in world 3 and world 5 (pre lag death). Between 300-500 online at a time is consistently where the game lands after a few months of play. Population is known to spike as high as 1,200 or so but it never goes significantly higher than that. The game is as it has always been.

That's because of the world size. The devs expanded the map either to test what happens when you have such a large world or out of whim. World 3 had something of the same problem. If you went to the outer grids you'd never see another soul if you didn't arrange to.
