H&H or Salem

Postby slowpoke68 » Fri Jan 31, 2014 12:26 pm

Hello all, started playing Salem the other day and am kind of hooked on the open world free form gaming. Reminds me of UO launch in a way. Very refreshing change.

Anyway, I also saw this game and tried it out a bit. The gameplay systems seem very similar and I understand they were made by the same devs.

I know Salem is newer and 3D and such, but looking at the sites it seems H&H has a lot more people playing. Also, I read that the Devs were stopping work on Salem or something recently.

My question is, to any experienced in both games, should I play this or Salem?

Thanks much!

You know, Haven has a lot of retarded ideas and mechanics... but Salem has even more.

HnH definately, though chances are you will die and fall out of the game almost immediately.
If you can make it past your first few deaths to get a brickwall you should be good.

We'd be glad to have you.

In my experience haven is better in almost every way.

The only thing I liked about salem was that you didn't die from drowning/animals.
On second thought, that's a pretty carebear mechanic, so getting gored by boars and violently raped by ants is better for the newbs.

Clearly your in the HnH forums so you will get a biased review and recommendation. Although you should get a fair warning that the devs are working on a complete rewrite of the HnH game. We are unsure what the new game will even look like. It wont be out in the coming weeks but it will happen sometime this year.

I would recommend HnH above Salem any day though as Salem lacks that spark that really makes people stick around. But nothing anyone will say will convince you till you tried both games for at least a week to get a feel.

There are some good points to Salem, I played it for over six months, but in comparison to Haven the game play is slow and tedious and as Xcom says it has nothing to keep you playing long term.

Haven is a remarkable game and pretty unique even with its flaws, I think we are all a little bit anxious concerning the rewrite, so my advice would be to play Haven now before its too late!

I don't really think there is that much bias tbh, a lot of Haven's players tried it out and wanted to like it, it does come from the same team afterall, I don't believe we all went over there wanting to hate it, lol, but it just doesn't have the same addictiveness and fails to sustain interest.

That said, I was under the impression it was still being worked on and changes were being made to improve its playability - but maybe that has changed now, I'm not sure.

But yes, Haven is better by leaps and bounds. :)

Thanks so much for all the replies. I figure the time spent in Salem was beneficial in helping me to get familiar with the game concepts. When I get home from work tonight I will give H/H a go :)

HnH > Salem. But as people warned you, world is dangerous place, so fear not if you get killed, continue playing and get to know the mechanics. I'm sure it will carry you into it and you'll like it. Even better it is if you find some friends to play together.

These days I play Salem and not H&H, but I'd still recommend H&H over Salem. I just needed a change because I was playing H&H for a long time. H&H has a lot better game pace and a lot more content.
