Colo(u)rs & Cultures

Postby Tonkyhonk » Mon Mar 17, 2014 2:52 pm

CASE ONE:
here are screenshots of *cape* posted by Scruffy from a while ago in screenshot thread.
Image
Image
i myself find it pink, and i called it "loftar's pink cape", but loftar calls it PURPLE, as in, "Roman purple" or "Tyrian purple".
when i check roman purple or tyrian purple on internet, it says it is more like maroon, which is more like red-brown to me and this cape looks very pink. (although the second picture does look a bit more purpler.)
it could be due to my screen color settings, but what color do YOU find it to be?

CASE TWO:
Xcom called the starvation bar *pink* when i find it *beige* which is more like *brown* to me. however, i am aware many english speakers and french speakers call it "yellow" very often.
Image
if someone tells me a man in a suit with *yellow* or *pink* shoes came to visit me, i would probably think he must be a weirdo, and then, see his shoes and find them normal *brown* and be relieved.
what color do YOU find it to be?

colors are in general categorized in many different ways depending on your language, culture or background, so there is no "correct" answer to it, but i am very interested in many more different examples :) i appreciate it if you would state your mother tongue and country along with your reply!
e.g.
  • most kids from western culture color the sun *yellow*, while japanese kids color it *red* (as in our national flag) and mongolians *white*.
(the same way, the moon is *white* for english speakers, but is *yellow* for us.)
  • there are *orange* cats in english speaking countries, but *orange* cats only exist in manga/anime in japan. not many here buy *orange* cars either(we call it brown).
  • some people say there are 7 colors in a rainbow, some say 6, some say 5, some say 8 and so on.
  • traffic "go" signal is *green* in the states, but japanese call it *blue* and it seems we even changed it to blue-ish green to match the international standards. we actually talked about this before in these forums.

it may give more interesting results with scents

scents left on the crime site and scents you took in inventory look pretty different in color though.
how i see them:
① light violet(blue-ish purple) in invent, white on site
② lime-green or yellow-green in invent, yellow on site
③ green (but in my own tongue, its yellow-green)
④ red or vermilion
⑤ yellow in invent, orange on site
⑥ purple

To me the first picture of the cape looks red whilst the second picture of it looks pink. The colour of the right bar by the cow I would call beige or light brown.
I've really not thought about it that much but I do find it interesting.

Edit: I'm from Sweden so swedish is therefore my mother language. Most people I know would probably say the same colours as I did. Although I've read somewhere that about 8 % of the male population has colour blindness which of course could change what colour people see.

British.

In case one: The top pic, I would call it pink too but in the second one it does indeed look purple.

Xcoms: Again, yes, that is beige to me.

most kids from western culture color the sun *yellow*, while japanese kids color it *red* (as in our national flag) and mongolians *white*.
(the same way, the moon is *white* for english speakers, but is *yellow* for us.)
there are *orange* cats in english speaking countries, but *orange* cats only exist in manga/anime in japan. not many here buy *orange* cars either(we call it brown).
some people say there are 7 colors in a rainbow, some say 6, some say 5, some say 8 and so on.

That is interesting, I hadn't noticed before that colors differ depending on culture. I would also call the sun and moon 'yellow/white' on the whole, but, dependent on it's actual color at the time, both the sun and the moon can appear red at times and the moon also sometimes appears yellow and even blue.
We say seven colors of the rainbow, I thought everyone did, so that is new information to me too.
Green is always tricky, I have a friend who swears she isn't color blind but we argue about the colors blue and green everytime it crops up, it actually infuriates me, lol, apart from grass any other green to her is blue, honestly, it's so annoying!

aye, women tend to be more precise about the name of colo(u)rs in general. but then, people categorize into simpler basic colo(u)rs (which is why i said *brown* afterwards, although we actually have a special name for that color in particular, "hada-iro" which means "skin-color").
wouldnt your boyfriend call it *yellow* instead? or *brown*?

I'd say the cape is a pinkish shade of purple :D And the cows thingie is a nude color, which is basically beige + pink. My incomes kinda depend on colours, so I check both my eyes and monitor from time to time. My monitor works perfect when it comes to colours and my eyes not so much. I have problems with a part of blue-ish green spectrum, but the rest is fine.
Average russian has no idea how purple looks like, it is a rare word and most people see it only in centuries old books. There is also a translation problem, I was talking about purple as "пурпурный", which looks like that:
Image
or like that (had to use russian wiki, because english one redirects to violet):
Image

But it also can be translated as viollet - "фиолетовый". The usual one, so I don't have to show you what do I mean, I think.
As for the rest, sun here is yellow, cats are gingers, rainbow has 7 colours, go signal is green, I'd call it's shade emerald. Moon is a hard one. It can be grey, yellow, white and even blue to russians.

UPD: checked cape from the first pic with eyedropper, photoshop says it is d53c68, which is light cherry.

English from the USA though I grew up around a lot of Chinese Toison speakers.

The first cape looks like a pink to me. The second cape is a purple. The hunger bar appears to be a light brown/biege color.

I just got the boys in the stockroom to come have a look, and yes, lol, they all said brown and also all said red for the cape in the top pic - there was disagreement with the second cape, two said pink and one said purple.

So, then I called in a couple of the girls and they all said beige, lol, and pink and purple - all staff were British, bar one of the girls, who is French.

@ Teck - it would appear you're a girl, :P
