Honestly, in a game with a very real lasting effects on everything you do, it's hard to trust a new player off the bat 100% Not to mention the time and effort it requires getting a player up to speed, only for them to realise the game is too hard for them, or they cannot invest the huge amounts of time it requires chances are pretty slim that "Veteran" players will recruit you.
I suggest playing the game as a hermit, getting destroyed by the poor choices you make and suffer the hardships that will be thrown at you and finally, after a month or two, depending on how dedicated you are.. you should have the skills needed to join a village and be an active contributing member of the community and more likely to be accepted by "Veteran" villages.
The wiki is your best friend, read it inside and out and have it open in a tab while you play. Eventually things become pretty self explanatory, but at the beginning everything is going to take you a long time ^^ I would also suggest that you checkout the wizards tower sub forum, it has custom clients for you to download, that not only increase the resolution of the game to the native monitor res, but features like night vision to make your chances of survival 10 times better. If you REALLY want to learn the game though, use the default client and learn all the hotkeys etc.
Still if you're certain about joining a village, you'll need to check out the dwarves and thieves section, last time I checked there was only a few worth applying ^^ but you can be the one to decide for yourself which are worth applying for and which aren't.
Good luck out thurr in the hearths buddy, maybe I'll see you round.
