A little question about damage....

Postby WizCollect » Wed May 14, 2014 6:59 pm

Hey,
so i found a place with brocken wall and no one was there playing anymore...
I went in looking in the chests, most already empty.
Then out of no where and with no combat, i got damage,
my hp went down to 1/1
no sign of any combat no one with a sling or bow near... and no leech dealing me a few hundert damage in under 2 min...

What the hell happend?

When you leave these scents: Trespassing, Theft, Assault, Vandalism; you lose 1 hard hit point per scent, because otherwise scents can be used to DoS the server.

I'm not sure you have to actually leave a scent, I think just committing a criminal act (such as opening something that isn't yours) causes damage. I made the same question a few days ago:

viewtopic.php?f=2&t=36190

With the suggestion to show the HP being lost, as with any other damage in the game.

btw how the hell can scents be used to overload the server?

Opening something that isn't your's leaves a scent.
Scents could be used to overload the server prior to w7 by scrolling items in and out of a container on a claim on which you have no theft permission. This makes literally hundreds of scents per second if done fast enough, crashing the server quickly.

Wouldn't a timer between scents be enough? I don't commit any crimes, but I can imagine how frustrating that is.

I don't really find it a problem unless you're not paying attention. I sort of like it as it makes it so you need to make your choices when investigating a ruin to salvage or a raid target with consideration.

Still, I wonder why scents would cause that overload. I mean, aren't hundreds of other things being sent/received by the server each second when the player drops normal items from the container or just walks around really fast?

Shift-transfering objects out of and into a container you don't have access to could generate theoretically infinite scents.

Imagine if you have tiree or four bots set up to transfer all items from a lc to inventory and back again, it would only take minutes before that grid has millions of scents on it. eventually the server runs out of RAM and loftar comes to nuke the walls of AD
