There are three primary goals when claiming land: Establishing a home/base, protecting resources, blocking access to other lands. Large claims are likely blocking a resource node that they do not wish for anyone else to have access to. Though I have no idea what you're talking about as the map there doesn't indicate any particularly large claims. It looks like there are lots of hermits dotted around the area and a few small villages.

If its over a stretch of water like that, My guess would be to protect a high Q Fishing or Clay node.
