Is Altair still out there?

Today i started a fresh new character (yea that fixed my problem of crashing i dont know why). point is thta i found myself in a very creepy place, full of corpses so i decided to move and move and move, then i found a razed villeage and some stones, one of them said "Farmer friend im moving to east. Altair", i kept on my searching for a place and i fund it already but in the way i found a corpse... anr it was Altairs body... i leave a pick for u and for Altair if he is still out there, im interested in knowing what killed him.
