I agree, though I do enjoy soloing, I think several aspects contribute to it. The unbalanced desire to have a mine due to need for metal = dissapearing out into the wilderness. The perma-kill I suppose does attract a very mentally unbalanced group, as difficult as the game is to get highly skilled and the overall atmosphere which would tend to attract a great many quiet life players, to destroy someone's character for no reason is quite demented. The fear of losing one's character to this is another real reason people live so seperatistly.
I guess ya just have to try to have fun despite rarely seeing anyone or interacting with other players.[/quote]
You raise a number of points I agree with. Permadeath combined with heavy grinding characters and an otherwise peaceful atmosphere is a recipe for a forum full of angsty threads.
We know that permadeath isn't going anywhere, and that the peaceful atmosphere is a large part of the game's draw. I suppose that making the game less grindy is the only option, but for some reason users and devs alike recoil at any suggestion to lower skill costs, increase FEP rates, or make resources more available.
That's not to say the game should be easy, or that trade should be irrelevant. Just that dying shouldn't drive you away from the game permanently because you just threw away six months of play time.
