What keeps you playing?

Postby the_portals » Tue Jun 09, 2015 8:48 pm

It seems like every time I try to introduce a friend to this game they end up quitting within the first week, and I've been kind of burned out as of late. So I was wondering, what is it about this game that keeps all you guys coming back?
I was in the Northern Army once and you can never take that from me

None actually plays this game, 90% of the remaining playerbase are bots that people forgot about, and the last 10% are masochists.
Early world exploit: Put your hearthfire inside a cave, then hold shift to position a claim right in front of a cave. After 8 hours the claim will be unbreakable. Since your hearthfire is inside the cave, you can still get back inside, and leave, but nobody will be able to enter, effectively making you unraidable for the first 3-7 days. Enjoy

It's a sandbox game with no direct goal. There isn't a pop-up in the corner that says 'build 3 steel for 10 exp' so it takes a self motivated kind of individual to enjoy it for long. Most people will build everything once and decide that their soldier sword means that they've beaten the game. It's also a game with limited content with the great bulk of novel experiences at the beginning of the game. The only players who I get to stay for any amount of time are ones that I make build their hearthling up from the ground. That's what keeps me and my friends going. A large base of novel, interesting experiences compounded with a sense of competition and self reward as we progress.

Also breaks. No game stays fresh forever no matter how much it updates and how much new content is added. Putting Haven down every once in awhile and playing something else again until I have a Haven itch does wonders. =)

OP. depending of the stage of the world, in early moments is the ilusion to be OP before to someone kill/raid/grief you
in mid get HQ things and evolve with high levels. in late world is just the wish of kill every enemy on sight, extintc some places or some like that.
for new players (and "old players" who's back and leave the game after 1 month) is lack of patience and constancy
the irony of this game is very easy: if you play it alone can be horrible and bored after some weeks/monhs, if you play in group is very funny ... in special when have targets in common ( build / craft / kill ) but in this game you cant play with your friends 24/7 so u need be deal with playing alone but with the sufficent trust in your friend who can continue the work if you dont are available.

Anothers faggots just dont play and write in the forum without reason.

PD. if you are searching a place , maybe you want contact me in PM :)

I am a masochist, I love to farm countless of crop circles, fill mansions with silkmoth eggs and mulberry leafs, do repetitive shit like baking bricks and especially feeding retarded cows.
Also trades from time to time.

Nothing really. I can say that what did keep me playing was people who created content for themselves and for other players: the oak cultists, the several decorators I met, some roleplayers I found, a few enthusiastic LSs, some others who systematically went out to teach noobs, and also weird players who through their actions created an interesting story worth being told, like the wanderer or the pants thief bunnylord. That's not the case anymore. In my experience people prefer to play this game as a soccer match rather than to create stories, and that pretty much kills the social aspect of the game for me.
