See, the main reasons you will want to watch a movie in a cinema is superior picture/sound quality and... Well, it's a whole different experience. Also, the movie is new, fresh, and you're unlikely to get the ending or other crucial plot twists Snape kills Dumbledore spoiled to you. Also, there's a social aspect wherein you can discuss the movie with people who also have seen it in a cinema instead of, nine months later, going "hey I just watched Die Hard 68 on DVD the ending is great" and people will reply "I saw that nine months ago".
Now, on the other hand, owning a movie on DVD lets you watch it however you want, whenever you want. This is kind of weird (but works) because even if you're unlikely to watch the movie at most once a year (this is a lot) it's oddly comforting to have the possibility.
In closing, we can conclude that releasing a movie to the cinemas first and then on DVD is a dictated by the movie industry because they are
MONEY-GRUBBING WHOOOORES.
