With marksmanship, I started killing bears at 23. I still am a bit too afraid to fight them with melee. They're really easy to take down as long as there still isn't any pathfinding and you've got more than one quiver. My first bear took about 73 arrows... Now i take them out in twenty.

All bear are not created equal. I started on lvl 7-8 bears at 30 skill (taking about 75 arrows and a lot of resting)

I now fight lvl 10 (mordor) bear with 70 skill, it takes about 55 arrows, 3/4 of the arrows hit, they just have a TON of hp.

And this is the Demigod of Mordor speaking.

You know. The one with the highest stats in the game next to Jorb and Loftar.

I just killed a level 5 bear today with 18 marksdwarfship. I had to make new arrows on the spot, and Ferinex helped me as well, since my one quiver with 40 arrows was nowhere near sufficient. I think I probably used around 100-140 arrows but I don't know for sure.

With 13 marksdwarfship my arrows pretty much all missed, however. (I had enough LP to do the upgrade to 18 then and there - I only fired 6 or so shots before upgrading though)

moon and I are focusing on melee. We feel that it's a more noble form of combat. Also it is destined for greatness in any sort of PVP conflict.

I don't really think it's going to surpass archery for hunting any time soon though, even when they implement pathing, there is still the option of constructing little basket/ fire place forts to run and hide in and shoot out of.

Maybe when they implement both pathing AND bears being able to knock over weak constructables...
