The wonders of nature

Postby Reynolds » Sun Jan 17, 2010 4:40 am

I made a new guy. Out in the middle of nowhere, I built a leanto and a bed. Then a level X bear comes and knocks me down in 1 hit. Something here needs fixing.

Don't worry. You'll get up again. And probably have only lost one hard hit point. Fix it with a leech.

I know, I'm not new here at all. But a lvl 10 bear shouldn't spawn near a newbie.

It seems that you are under the impressions that new characters should be "safe"; which is, I would argue, an erroneous premise. Since the introduction of wilderness spawning, this is my view:

1. You spawn in civilization by way of a charter stone. With that comes all the advantages and disadvantages of civilization: You are safe from level-X bears, but there are people around you that may rape or kill you and there may well be a problem with resource depletion.
2. You spawn in the wilderness, where it is certainly not safe. Rather the opposite; I would very much like to develop the early game (and mid-game, and end-game) in the wilderness into something much more of a survival game, where it's normal to die a couple of times in the process of getting the hang of it.

This is the kind of game I thought I was playing when I first logged on and built a stone axe. I would love to see more development in that direction.

If you have a new character and a bear comes along, you either run or hide behind a rock or a tree.

Much like niltrias, I've always wanted the game to be more focused on survival, and I know one thing that would be really cool:
Animals fear fire - you already start with some torches; use them to fend of the wild animals.

I'd actually also like to see something as basic as lighting a fire made more difficult and error prone.
Taming fire was kinda like a milestone in the human evolution, and I think that that should play a bigger role in survival.
