Does anybody know, how it looks like? I don't really what I have to look for, maybe a screenshot would be nice.

It's the part of water which you can walk on. AFAIK all water areas have it on edges so when you find water, you've got plenty of shallow water, too.

I know of one small stretch of river bank which does not have any shallow water on one side. This is exactly at the edge of a minimap tile where the two minimap edges meet, so I think it is a glitch from when the map was generated.

Before you ask, no, there are no shallow river crossings. The only ways to cross a river are to:
- build or find a boat and ride it across
- swim across*
- teleport across by using traveling**

* (extremely dangerous, do not attempt without 100% stamina and 40 constitution ... or more)
** requires a known destination, all players start with 2; the RoB and their Hearth fire. The RoB is usually too far away to be used, and the hearth fire is presumably on the wrong (read: same) side compared to your current position.
The Dwarf is making a plaintive gesture. He doesn't really care about anything any more.
