I finished building my log cabin,
made a pretty little fence around everything i wanted to own...
had not read into swimming, thought id give it a try,
turned swimming on and forgot about it...

10 minuets later.. i deid.. perma-death, forever, gone...

time to find a new game for afew weeks while this one is passed Alpha and onto Beta =Y

It has always struck me as odd that Swimming doesn't simply cost 20k LP to purchase. At least then there'd be a big "HEY, NO N00BS" sign stuck to it. As it is, it's one of the cheapest skills in the game and logic seems to dictate "Oh, I can buy it without thinking then, just like woodcutting".

I think it's a good way to make people read the forums.

Either they do and not buy it.
OR they don't read forums buy it and die then go and read the forums.
OR they don't read die and ragequit.

isnt there still the warning when you turn it on the first time (or buy it)?

Nope, there is nothing, no warnings of any kind. I have swimming. I buy all skills when I can afford them in sequence. It didn't take me long to get swimming. And the only difference is that when I try to walk too deep when throwing a fishing line out I get the message "You need to activate swimming to enter deep water" instead of the "You cannot enter deep water without swimming" message.

As for, "You should read the forum!" I'm afraid I have to respectfully disagree with that. The forum is filled with a lot of bickering and not-very-edifying conversations. The search function in the forums are not the absolute best, and there is no clear path to the best how-to-instruction posts. To find all the information a noob needs would involve a *lot* of reading of stuff no noob needs to waste time on. Neither is their any mentorship system that works. I was warned for example to stay out of irc if I wanted to run alts as they would be traced back to me using the address I displayed there. There isn't a friendly place that noobs can go where some experienced players will freely give tips and information.

I think the op has a valid point. Since swimming can be so very lethal it only makes sense to give a warning at the time of purchase and not to rely on new players finding out through tragedy or osmosis.
