what's the deal with armor?

anyone figured out what the armor numbers mean now? j&l could we have some explanation please?

I think it shows the amount of damage that it isn't blocking. Especially with ants.

628/418 total armor class and cows still hit me... 216 melee using shield.

perhaps armor is not so good against animals... I heard arrows are supposed to be the new king of hunting

yeah i mean i can kill them all with archery that's no problem i'm just trying to get some data on the new melee system

This is purely guesswork, but...
Looks like armor works fine against weapon damage, at least for bows. It doesnt seem to work at all against animals. I know that UA has some sort of penetration stat, so I am guessing that the animal attacks are counting as UA attacks with a massive penetration score, hence bypassing the armor.
