Some Observations

Postby Jfloyd » Sun Feb 28, 2010 5:36 am

Here are things I've noticed with the new map:

1- Fishing has a use now, and is quite an effective way to get food.
2- LP, slightly harder to come across right away, yet if you stay away from the grind and just try to establish yourself (bed, leanto, 3 baskets) you have enough for your first skill
3- The boughs from elms have no use, so it seems.
4- Spindly taproots seem a bit harder to find.
5- Groups are your best chance for survival.

Why are groups your best chance for survival? I would have thought with the new limitations on the local food supply that being in a group would be harder as you need more food in a smaller area.

I now live with 5 people and we are doing quite fine. After an hour or two of work, we have a few cupboards, some skins, and some baskets and saws. We are doing reasonably well, and we each have general jobs such as hunting and expanding the base. Our main concern currently is food now. We need to catch rabbits or travel out some distance for apples, ect. Anyways, I wouldn't say its better or worse with others. But progress does seem to move along faster.

Edit: One of the members just got animal husbandry. When we get chickens, we will be quite well off, food wise at least.

Indeed I did, and I'm halfway to Wheelmaking too. I would take the time to finish grinding to it, but it's pretty late here and I have plans for tomorrow. In any case, boat travel is imminent, with crops and livestock next in line.

Anyway, I personally think the "nerfs" to supplies are hardly an issue at this point. If anything, it makes it more interesting than just grind constantly in the same place. I now have to move out into the forests to get a healthy supply of branches to use for wicker baskets (no need to deplete the local clay for wasteful teapot grinding). While doing so, I stop at the nearest apple tree and grab a quick snack to keep going. And once everyone has crops or something similar set up, things will be better off.

Personally, I like this world better than the last one. Not only is the character reset welcome, but the new restrictions make things interesting and challenging. I never worried about food before; now I need to keep an occasional eye on my hunger to keep myself going. Before I just spammed a ton of wicker baskets and teapots in the same place; now I do some exploring at the same time. I might be in the minority, but I'm definitely satisfied.

Edit: Almost forgot, elm boughs are considered branches. Therefore, you can get 11 branches from a single elm instead of 7, although the boughs take up too much room for it all to be held at once (without a backpack anyway).

I have to admit I like this world so far. I think many people were threw off because the mechanic changes were not expected. SO most had already formulated "plans" and were ready to go only to find a complete re-thinking had to take place. Hence quite a bit of confusion and frustration, me included. But as things have progressed and new plan takes shape I find myself more comfortable and more open to liking the new world and even some of the new mechanics...I still think the fruit regrowth time is way too extreme, the branch restriction a little bit much, other than that I think it will make for a lot better community, less griefing and characters being more valuable. I do think some minor tweaks would help...like a few more branches per session and of course that fruit regrowth needs to be seriously cut. Clay is a bit extreme but we founded a settlement by Q48 clay area so we're ok now..lol I think overall it will improve the game greatly...especially the paranoia/greifing aspect. I hope anyway.

#1: Why yes, yes it is. :D
#2: Quite. It's not too hard to get up, though.
#3: I have no idea, I haven't found a use for them yet!
#4: Not really(At least not to me I could just be lucky though..XD). In fact, I was going to say i'm finding them easier then I was before and I have nowhere near the exploring level or whatever it's called that I had on my before reset char.
#5: Well, not necessarily. I heard that you get higher Q stuff if you're by yourself then if you're with people. However you'll have to spread your skills pretty thin so it'll in a way take you longer. Soo, a solution would probably be to be a tiny group. 3-5 people.

Uhhh. Doesn't that require chicken coops? Which you can't make without straw(which seems incredibly hard to get in this map XDD.)
