Rangers unite!

Postby Rift » Thu Jun 18, 2009 12:20 am

I think it would be helpful to have a list of rangers and where they usually are /live.
[i'll edit this post and add you if you post]
Minimum requirements: Must have 30 exploration, and atleast one combat skill of 50 or higher.
Feel free to leave exploration level/military skill un-exact if you desire it.
[Name]: [Location]
[Exploration Level]
[Military skills]
[Services: Recovery, Tracking, Vengeance, Execution]*
[Payment: Y or N]

Rangers:
Rift: Home is Laketown, also seen around giant forest.
Exploration: high enough
Military Skills: high
Services: Recovery, Tracking, Vengeance, Execution
Payment: On successful completion; Will occasionly work for charity if for kin or newer player.

Milaha: Middle of bum-fk nowhere, I will need to travel to you.
Exploration: (most likely enough)
Services: Recovery, Tracking, Vengeance, Execution (service only rendered if there is a clue, I am not an assassin)
Payment: On successful completion; wont work for free, but do have easy to obtain payment options.

Owen Quillion (KoE on the forums): Bottleneck and Bottleneck hinterlands
Exploration: Novice
Services: Recovery, Tracking
Payment: None required, favors welcomed; Preferential treatment for Bottleneck residents and will not travel far.

Diatre: Clayshire
Exploration: 41
Marksmanship: 78
Services: Everything
Payment: No, if I have time I'll find your criminal for free

[Name]: Adam- [Location]: Bottleneck
[Exploration Level] 32
[Military skills] Medium skill - Somewhere between 30-50, I can't specify.
[Services]: Theft recovery, revenge battery, no murder unless support.
[Payment: Y or N] Depends on the job, theft recovery no, battery yes. However all Bay 12 guys get free service.

Hack McMack: Pinevally, north of Y forest
Exploration: Low Thirties
Military Skills: Medium
Services: Any, but a good reason is needed for vengeance or murder.
Payment: Free for anyone who cannot pay. If you can, you probably want a stronger ranger.

I have a Ranger, his name is the ghost who walks, his home is a cave in the jungle, all you will ever see of him is his mark

Some thoughts on requirements;

I'm not 100% sure of combat mechanics (and in particular how weapons factor into it), but it seems to me combat ability would be more pertinent than the equipment. Perhaps replacing the steel weapon requirement with a requirement of: one combat skill of [x], likely equal to the exploration for ease of remembering (and that might justify lowering it a bit; but any numbers we pick are really somewhat arbitrary without some sort of census of average thief skills, so I'll leave that discussion to others more knowledgeable than me).

EDIT: Seems you changed it while I was posting so the steel item thing isn't as big a deal - weapon skill might be still be relevant, though.

It'd also be nice to have a list for 'services rendered' and/or something about payment - for ease of reading, perhaps a boolean of 'free services' or 'requires payment'. Some people (like myself to some degree) might be more interested in just tracking down stolen stuff, and perhaps finding perpetrators but letting a town or something handle the actual murder issue. In that case combat ability/equipment would be irrelevant, so it might be worth noting that too and waiving the combat requirements for them.

So, basically, an entry would be something like:

[Name]: [Location]
[Exploration Level]
[Services: Recovery, Tracking, Vengeance, Execution]*
[Payment: Y or N]

*(Recovery = stolen item recovery, Tracking = finding where the perp lives and letting a community/individual handle it - may be extraneous, Vengeance = Beating people up without killing them Execution = self explanatory)

Stating combat ability might be a mistake, as that would give ne'er-do-wells a very good idea of what they're dealing with and might put the ranger in more danger than he should be. A simple 'I've got a skill higher than [x]' would be sufficient without listing the actual level.

I am not listing my exploration skill, or stealth skill for that mater. For three reasons, 1. Then the thieves know their target goal to evade me or track me down. 2. It really does not do the consumer any good, as all they know is that the track is above their skill, not how high it actually is. 3. We do not know exactly how the stat and skill interact w/ each other.

Milaha is very right and hits on what my poor brain danced around; openly advertising your skills is letting thieves know where to set the bar. Unless they're so kind as to tell us their Thieving skills, it's probably best to not mention them at all or use a very non-granular description of prowess - Perhaps something to the effect of Novice / Journeyman / Master tracker or something (I'm sure someone will mention Dabbling through Legendary, but that's way too granular). Customers should probably have a very rough idea of the skill of the tracker they're hiring, but that may be well-solved through reputation.

There might be a good argument for removing 'requirements' at all - serious rangers will be constantly improving, most likely, and having a low skill will have word get around fairly quickly, with any risks that entails. Anybody putting himself up here will be making himself a target and that's his business - if he gets killed, well, it was his own fault. Probably in the spirit of the game, as well.

That said, I'll go ahead and stick my neck out.

to kind of give a idea of what your getting, but without going into details..

At one point in time I was hesitant to do ANYTHING violent against anybody, but the game has become overrun with thieves and griefers. What I represent has been shoved under ground because of that. I'm out for blood. :x

And I don't care who knows my skill levels. By the time it hits them they'll be dead.

I was there when the executions were occuring, very well done. It wasn't random either, Coincidentally, a friend of mine became a new player today, I helped him to learn appropriate skills and use a non intrusive training regiment. (no wicker baskets or kilns)

He learned his skills rather fast and I introduced him to how the food works. His name is Ocelot so show him kindness.

It's good to know that there is security in the world. Keep up the good work.

May be a good idea to build ranger outposts along the highways, keep the chests stocked with bones twigs and food.

I need to plant some trees though before I cut any more down. I've killed about 80trees myself, time to allow them to come back.

Murder will require the assistance of another ranger and payment will be double of battery.
