The End?

Postby Yolan » Mon Mar 29, 2010 7:58 am

Well, judging by the amazing response to the election thread, it looks like New Brodgar is pretty much dead.

Thanks raiders.

If anybody is still actively living there, and intends to continue to do so, this is the situation. If you want the town to continue, its pretty much up to you at this point to make it happen. Myself and Nano are out. I'm pretty sure Cookie and McClean are too. Forget the election, if you can convince Cookie to pass on the baton, its yours I suppose.

Sorry to hear it, terrible development. I was so hoping things would be different in this world incarnation. Sems so strange that so many seem to want a more civil social game but somehow it just isn't allowed to happen. I'm not sure where to place the exact blame.

I have to admit...Things are looking pretty grim.
People still do log on ocasionally, just...It's a little more different ever since the raid.

Yeah, you loose a few of the powerhouse players and everything else starts to come apart.

It is pretty sad, but in the context of an alpha, and of thinking of the town as an experiment, there has been a lot of things learned.

- The layout of New Brodgar was infinitely more successful than that of old Brodgar. 20x20 plots seem to be a good balance between wanting to live close to others, and wanting to have space to do your own thing. The street layout also worked well.

- If we had gone for a massive square at the start, it would have been mostly covered by the initial village influence of the idol, and we could have gone for signpost connections right off the bat.

JEEZUS CHRIST! A mouse just peeked out at me from a cavity in my left speaker.... BRB....

Bleh...... gross... soooo gross.... I hope they aren't inside my computer case too..... Only just put poison down the other day.......

OK. Ok. Back on topic.

The game is still Alpha. And its painfully clear that there remains a lot that needs to be done/changed for emergent complexity to be fostered. Larger towns/global trade could still develop/be fostered over time, but the gravity of the game as it stands seems to push people towards small scale, isolated settlements.

I'm pretty sure J&L are working on village code for the next release (if I remember correctly). Maybe their changes will bring us just that bit closer to making places like NB work.

So...I take it the mouse wasn't cute at all? Even if he/she was hiding in your speaker?

Mice are cute when they are safely in a plastic box, and not running around eating your rice.

Sorry to hear about this, NB was the town pointed at trading most I would have said, and that's exactly what H&H needed and still does.
Would be cool if people would try and continue, but I fully understand you giving it up Yolan.
Good effort

Well, its not really so much me giving up, as that I only intended to give it a boost to start with (hence not taking any official leadership position).

That said, in light of how things are going generally, I am going to (effectively) quit H&H for the time being. If anybody would like my property in New Brodgar, send me a PM and I can leave you the key somewhere you specify (I'm not going to actually try and organise meeting you, its too hard!).

I hope nobody takes this as a rage-quit. Last time original Brodgar kind of crumbled I left-off playing for many months, until the world re-set. I will continue keeping an eye on dev updates and look forward to seeing how things go in the future.

Postnote/more explanation: About six weeks ago I found www.alljapaneseallthetime.com/blog, and really started re-thinking my approach towards language learning. I've been studying Japanese for seven years now (as some of you have personally had to suffer my character insertion firefox addon writings, you probably know this =D), but I have yet to really break out of upper intermediate and into an advanced/fluent level. What I have come to realise is that you just can't get fluent by studying for a few hours a day. You gotta live in the language. So, for the last five weeks or so I have turned a large part of my life into Japanese. Only Japanese TV, only Japanese books, Japanese radio all the time, etc. etc. Been really noticing a difference. Thing is though, English is hard to kick! Haven and Hearth (esp. forums) has turned into one of these last bastions of English in my non-working life that I am now re-thinking.

So, I just signed myself up for a free Japanese MMRPG. Going to see how it goes.

Best regards to those of you I don't hate

All of the best of course and hope to see you back here some time.

I'm sure you won't mind me posting this here: Brodgar villagers that wish to relocate are welcome to PM me. We are a relaxed community, however well organised and we are confident of a bright furure. We have access to all metal types, bar precious, which we however hope to trade for in the not too distant future. Noobs welcome.
