Over-expanding

Postby AlexFili » Mon Jun 22, 2009 10:47 am

There is a house near a swamp who has claimed a very large amount of land and seems to be purposefully grabbing a large plot of land to the north-east of my house. He's barely using the land that he's got, but he's already grabbed a ton of land. I wouldn't normally mind but he's not doing anything constructive with it at all. It seems that he just land-grabbed to make sure that I could not expand my claim.

Since it's impossible to 'declaim' land without destroying the whole place... it's problematic because he won't just turn around and reduce the size of his land because I asked him to. If he'd just expanded West there would be no problem, but he has decided to do a massive land-grab to the south.

I would like to remind everyone to not make large claims next to other people and be respectful to the borders of others.

He can never be closer than 5 tiles from your borders.

Do you have any reason to expand and/or use the land for what you consider constructive? I don't think it really is a matter of being considerate, he's allowed to do it. You certainly have the option to expand to get what land you want/need. Perhaps he finds that owning a large plot is his version of 'fun' in the game. I also believe this game is headed for land-grabbing as a basis of contention (on purpose) both by individuals and groups.

Dwarfu, part of the problem is that I developed a public highway, if anyone builds a claim anyway on it Ill box them in or kill them

What? That sounds totally over the top to me.

So you decide where 'public' roads should be and ultimately change the game for anyone that comes after you? While I appreciate the work you contributed to the road system, saying that no one can claim a spot that happens to be near/include 'your' public road is crazy. If an area isn't claimed, anyone has a right to claim it.

How do you know the person might not be open to rerouting the road around their claim and even doing the work to complete it?

I'm not being argumentative or even playing devil's advocate, but seriously? Kill them?

I'll talk to them first, naturally - goes without saying really. Thats why I dont say it.

TO CLARIFY

If I discover someone has or is close to encroaching land on a public highway, I'll leave them a message or post the issue on the forum to see who it is, 3 real life days pass by, if nobody says anything and the claim has expanded over the road, I will reconstruct further away from them if possible - However if it continues, their stones will be carved and trees chopped, if they remain silent and their identities hidden, I will take that as a sign of further action.

I'd really like to hear other people's take on this - especially anyone claiming Lawspeaker status.

Ok that claim belongs to me, sorry about that.

I am using the land as a very large farm to the south of where I do my main things. Sorry if it doesn't look like I am doing anything with it, waiting for my crops to grow.
To the north of my main camp I am creating a large forest around the swamp.

Also I kind of dislike the fact that I had my claim here first, someone builds a highway right up to the edge and then threaten me.
Now I am going to log in and continue with what I was doing.

EDIT> Thank you for destroying stone, tress, etc on my claim before talking with me. I will continue to expand my land for farm/forest area and I will contact a ranger. Nice meeting you.

Seems to me it is perfectly possible that your encroacher has spotted the public highway and said to himself, "Ah, perfect border to my new housing development!" If he hasn't encroached the road what makes you think he intends to?

I mean, if his name is ClintEastwood2 or something I can see you getting your hackles up. Or is the problem that you were intending to expand in that direction, so road access or no, there goes the future trailer park and revenue rent that you were counting on? Is his settlement too close to Blue Haven in the first place so it blocks your urban sprawl?

Has this person actually been avoiding you, such as logging off when you approach them?

Not everybody is going to frequent the forum. We have some players on whose English is rudimentary. Remember there are pretty close to the same number of people with internet access in China as the population of the States. You could also be looking at culture and language issues here if they seem suspiciously shy.

But if he does expand over the road... Yeah, I can see that is an act of aggression.

Why not put a temporary claim just the other side of the road until you can get it hashed out?

I didn't expand over the road and didn't even intend to go that far South.

They however built there highway right up to my claim which I believe is the problem here.

There has been theft, grief and harassment without giving me any chance whats so ever to log in (this happened in less then 16 hours since I was SLEEPING) and decide to wreck the place up.
