Are vaults cheating?

Postby theTrav » Wed Jun 24, 2009 6:55 am

I use a vault. I think vaults are a good idea and to some degree necessary to combat griefers and alt exploiters.

Having said that, I also think they're as much 'cheating' and abusing the game mechanics as hearth walling, alt exploiters, macro-grinders and other random griefing.

It's a defensive griefing sure, but does that make it ok?

Completely unrelated, but whenever I hear "vault" here, I think of something rather different.

I've played rougelikes a bit too much.

Well then. One reason I wall is because people make vaults. That bothers me since its a fullproof way to stop me from tampering in their goods, so I do something to prove a point. But claim building stopped that so thiefing will eventually grind to a halt as vaultbuilding becomes commonplace and you'll see it all disappear as we get bored.

I don't think it's the intention of the Devteam to make something 100% thiefproof. So we will eventually see a way to enter these vaults too. Not that I need one, my resident griefer is apparently allergic to claims.

And hiding behind a building/stone isn't a full proof way to stay alive? Putting your hearthfire behind something isn't a full proof safety measure for when you log out? The only point you're proving is that you're a horrible liar and a horrible griefer. The thing that people will get bored of is being robbed blind without being able to do a damn thing about it. And that's already happening, surprise surprise!

You abuse alts, we abuse vaults. Either we live underground or get stolen from, it's that simple. I just hope that the devs have it on their to-do list to actually balance us both out, because right now it is indeed boring.

If we are implementing anti-griefer measures and anti-kilnwall measures right now, we are getting the actual content updates later, and I'd really really like a major content update atm. So I propose we leave it as it is for the moment, as we really have more pressing issues.

Robbed blind? Log out with the items you want, Move into a place people won't find you. AKA not 40 seconds from the ring. Theres many ways to escape this. Hell I don't even think the people who are EASILY findable but far away from the ring ever get robbed. Unless there is some form of Higher skill thief communion out in the more uncivilized rings, But all things are generally done by one or two people. Also is alts your excuse. Technically My thief isn't a alt, Its the only character I have. Its just his bloodline carries a proud tradition of partaking in theft.

I disagree. What good is more content when it can't be enjoyed or used to it's fullest? So what if we get a new building or new torch, stop the damned altpocalypse first. Why wouldn't that be high priority?

It's been done. Doesn't matter how far away you are from the ring, when people like you get it into their heads they they need to prove a "point".. well, they're not going to stop. I've seen settlements from all corners of the world completely trashed over and over again by alts. And let's be honest, it shouldn't be necessary to fill our inventories to the brink every time we log out. Besides, not everyone can fit ALL of their valuables into an inventory.

I edited my post. But I don't use alts, making alts is cheating, and takes faaar too long to abuse. My thief is my main character,Also to point out another issue. The ring of brogdor is a barren wasteland that if anything prevents lp gain for new characters. Newbies included. It makes them all quit because they can't find what to do or where to go. They only stay if someone is there to guide them in the right direction. Maybe someone other than me will step up and do this? Oh wait nobody probobly will. Also all over the world? You don't even leave the ring of brogdor settlements. Stop pretending you do.
