its getting really tiring to see people literally cry about 'greifers'

I cannot understand what it is that people do not see about this game. it is sandbox. if someones got it out for you and makes alts and fuc`ks your shit up, tough luck. go kill him, go 'greif' him. stop complaining about greifing and ways to stop it and bla bla bla, all this will acheive is a more limited game that doesnt allow the freedoms it was originally designed for.

has not one person played UO here? the UO community is so much more mature about this shit. they dont complain about greifers, they just deal with them. people are too used to having games be really forgiving and not allow this kind of thing, people really need to stop complaining so much and making some huge issue out of it.

Heh so far this must be the worst reason to leave.
Just don't read the forum and stay ingame. Murder everyone you want but don't expect to live for long.

While I do agree that some degree of griefing is part of the game, the general input and action of griefers is very useful for us, since there are definitely some degrees of griefing that we do want to prevent. Like, oh, I don't know, the building of drying frames in front of the door of every log cabin which renders the log cabin completely useless. :)

I recently got a PM about griefing, and I guess I can quote my answer to that PM here, for anyone who wishes to read it:
The way I see it is this; it is our intention to make the "evil" actions possible to perform only with relatively high-level characters (which is, of course, the reason for the Trespassing, Theft, Rage and Murder skills), thereby creating a situation where it is a real risk for the perpetrator of a crime to be killed in revenge for his actions. Our intention is that it shouldn't be possible to "just" create a couple of alts and go around griefing with them, while it should be possible to create, for example, a skilled thief or assassin given some effort.

Right now, there seem to be a couple of issues preventing smoother operation of the system:
a) The possibility to "hide" a hearth fire behind some other object thereby making force summoning impossible, which will be fixed at some point, but it's a bit tricky.
b) The inability of containers to check for the Theft skill; or differing between just illegally "checking out" an inventory and actually stealing from it; and other similar issues (which is due to a problem with the current implementation of inventories, which will be fixed).
c) The fact that plants don't check for the Theft skill for harvesting, which will be fixed.
d) Maybe the black skills are too cheap currently? (It should be mentioned at this point that the skill system will likely see a major overhaul at some point, but it is uncertain just when and how)

(Of course, any part of this should not be construed as if it were a definite future plan of ours, since it may change at any time without notice (maybe I should make that my forum signature))

Oh yeah..Hehe.

Well i sometimes talk about griefing, but i do realise most of it is not. Isolated from dense population it's pretty peaceful in laketown we discuss quite some topics daily but griefing isn't one of them.

Yeah! Let's all make alts and grief each other! That's a way to make a long lasting, great game!

Good point, OP. How could I be so foolish.

You can make this one low priority. Just today I noticed theft clues by my crucibles (which were empty) and chests. Nothing was stolen, so I decided to find who it was just for the sport of it. I had no intention of killing this rude trespasser, but then I found out that his hearth is hidden behind a house in Bottleneck. Well, I loathe people who use such cheap tricks, so I built a bunch of fires behind that house. I'm fairly sure he's walled in and can't get out.

Had this "thief" placed his hearth where he could be summoned, he would most likely have kept his character. I'd just rough him up a bit and leave him a note to stay out of my stuff. But by using his cheap trick he has ensured that all of his LP will be wasted. So, it's actually against the thieves' interest to hide their hearths, because it *forces* people to wall them in.

Dear thieves, please make it possible to summon you, so you can keep some or all of your LP and we can have more satisfying closure.

So you're tired of people complaining about griefers? Tough shit to you, I say. These are forums, this is an alpha game, they're supposed to complain about things. That's why it's ALPHA. It's not finished yet. I could complain about you making yourself look like a complete asshole with every post you make but then you'd probably agree with me. See? There's no point.

Oh my, you're one tough badass for playing UO! You're one of the most mature people on the internet because you play UO! They don't complain about NOTHIN! .....

...thanks for telling me that the game is in alpha and that this is a forum and that these two things constitute mass complaints.

god youre dumb. i didnt claim i was badass, i didnt claim i was a mature internetz citizen either. I stated that UO players were able to deal with shit getting stolen, or getting killed because someone was hiding right by their house and popped out of nowhere to stick a chunk of steel up their ass.

and jorb, yes youre right about fencing in homes with racks etc. those are the kinds of things which must be dealt with. People must simply understand the difference between fairplay and greifing.
