The Heathian Dollar

Postby Reynolds » Sat Apr 24, 2010 8:13 pm

I am going to work on a paper currency for H&H. Simply put, it's a piece of parchment with a code written on it, and it's worth in copper coins. Here is how it will go down. I am working on a code system that would be hard to figure out, and hard to counterfeit. To check if a note is real, you would go to a little website thingy where the codes for all bills are stored, and if it's a match, you have a real Herthian Dollar. To make sure there is no inflation, I am going to use the ancient chinese method. You turn in your coins and receive the same amount in paper money, and the money is stored there in case you want to get the metal coins back.

The problem is that it would require one hell of a vault to keep away thieves. I'm thinking a copper mine surrounded by 2 layers of brick, and then as much palisade as I can. Then the coins would be stored inside the mine. On each parchment it will say something like "100 Hearthian Dollars - (code here)" 1 Heathian Dollar is 1 copper coin.

What is the going price, in copper coins, for one piece of parchment? Because that would have to be added to the dollar to make sure the cost of parchment doesn't fluctuate to bad. What do you guys think? (I got the idea from my friend you guys know as Farm Champ, who used to play H&H.)

I think it's a bit premature. While a vault is certainly smaller and thus more defensible than a town, it currently seems next to impossible to keep vandals and thieves out of anything. And in any case, settlers aren't prone to trusting banking institutions.

The idea itself is fine, though, and is bound to happen if the game lives long enough. Hope it works out.

money is useless, you can't use coins for anything, so why would we want them?

Yeah, cavebulbs would be a much better base for the currency than coins.

You are incredibly stupid, in a game where coins are barely used because of the annoyance related to them you want to make them even more confusing to use?
You're also taking away the one use of them, using coins at stalls not to mention all the other holes in your idea.

Behold as settlers ignore the purpose of currency, particularly the kind that isn't a pain to carry around. (Granted, I don't know whether a stack can hold infinite coins, but a single paper would still save on hauling various types.)

But since society still runs on a barter system...maybe you should try having currency represent bars of metal and/or other common goods, for the time being.

Are you just as dumb? "base it on bars of metal!" What the hell do you think coins represent?

So instead of using coins to represent metal by using the metal in a coin press, you think that it is easier for players to take their metal to someone to be turned into a code?
You don't see this being even more annoying?

Like I said, right now it's pretty pointless, because everyone just barters with goods. Anyone trading for metal will probably use it to build farm tools and swords. If and when people actually start hoarding metal simply as a trade good, having a neutral bank involved would make the hauling and trading a lot easier, and safer if the bank is legitimate.

So right now, I doubt it'd go far. Sooner or later, I imagine it'd work.
