There's lots of life where i live now. But to be safe; i made a town kind of deep in the forest so people don't pull up on a river, steal shit, and leave.

Ctrl+c is global chat IIRC. I am not sure if it works.
Also you might want to try Pacho's client. It has IRC client integrated.

Getting back on topic, yeah, it's pretty lonely for the first week or so...
Once you've got your walls set up, you should go adventure more. Use a boat and go exploring.
You're bound to see some sight of civilization, since newbies can spawn anywhere in the wilderness.
