H&H birthday?

Postby burgingham » Sat May 08, 2010 11:29 am

I just saw that hanuman joined 5/30/2009 and I asked myself, what is the official birthdate of h&h or at least what do our beloved devs consider to be the birthday?

Jorb and Loftar created their forum ids on April 3rd, last year. They are the first characters, so I would assume that was H & H's birthday.

But that's just the forum.
The game was up and running (and playable) long before that.

Loftar has the git-archives since day one, so he could probably find the exact date. We usually celebrate the birthday of "Jorb" and "Loftar", our god characters, which, IIRC, is november 3rd 2007 (I might be off on that, though), rather than the birthday of the game per se. Only legends speaks of a time before the gods: The first being, the lost child (The first time the dude was supposed to walk with animation, he ran straight off into the woods on login), the abominations (Player animations out of sync look... unsound) and the dark forest (Map failed to render, while objects (i.e. the old trees) did).

But OP is right in so far as it has soon been a year since we first started getting users, though. In a way it feels like yesterday, in another way it feels like a different life altogether. I went to Krakow last year in may. I flew out in the morning, and I remember sitting up all night grinding sausages the night before, since we had just implemented the meat grinder. It wasn't long after that that people started trickling in. I remember the first people I introduced to the game. I remember sitting up whole nights just spying at people playing the game. We've come a long way since. :)

I still distinctly remember the layout of the first hunting camp. There were cows that could be butchered, drying frames and tanning tubs. Quite simply. :)

Hmm? Really? That is my IRL birthday. I guess I was way off the mark, then.

I actually don't have Git archives since day one. When just starting up a new piece of software, revision control makes little sense until there is at least basic structure in place, and Jorb's birthday that year was the time I actually started committing. The program probably hadn't existed a very long time before that, though, but there was a completely unofficial, short-lived, non-networked version of the game (written in C with SDL) before that which Jorb started writing with some help from me. I would imagine that the first line of code on that one was written sometime in September 2007.

Either way, the birthday of the characters Jorb and Loftar is indeed what should be closest to any birthday of Haven. Jorb is, of course, entirely off (as usual) and their actual birthday is 2007-12-08. You could just check your account page, you know. ;)
