Ground items wiped during reset

Postby Atherman » Sun May 23, 2010 7:41 am

>Walking around the wilderness, exploring for roots in my newly acquired bear cape.
>A boar sees me and books it to knock me unconscious
>I take off my bear cloak and throw it on the ground, my inventory full of herbs
>Thinking I'm smart, avoiding the damage it was gonna do to it, the server goes down for a few minutes
>Log back in, cape is nowhere to be found

Moral of the story? The ground isn't safe, not even for 2 minutes.

Well, part of the moral is that server bugs should be fixed so that crashes don't happen. :)

Apart from that, though; with the more aggressive map trimming I'm running these days, items dropped on the ground aren't as safe as they used to be back when that was implemented. I've considered making them persistent (but still subject to expiry, of course).

I've come to accept the loss of my lovely bear skin.

I'll have to defeat another!

Haha, I lost a full crop's worth of straw because of it. Shame.

Oh well, the ability to finally build a table sorta made up for it. And I probably have enough bloody beehives as it is.

Nonpersistend stuff that is dropped should not vanish (at least not without a server crash) for a reasonable timeframe as long as users are around (even in case they leave the area for a few, say <5 minutes).

Yeah, I completely understand why you want objects to disappear after a while, there's over 2 million tiles worth of space for things to be tossed out. However it seems some things are far far too short. Things like straw and plant fibers will disappear within a few minutes, which is a particular problem if you have a large field.

I imagine if everything was made to last as long as blocks and boards, or items were changed to work like animals, and vanish after 30 minutes of not being loaded by anybody, nobody would mind it.

Still doesn't help server crashes though I guess. :D
