Annnnnd it's Claimed by someone else, AWESOME! why the hell is finding a mine so damned difficult in this game? There's only so much I can do with wood and leather.

If you head into the new SGS (Head far north/east), there are tons of unclaimed mines.

Most are copper and tin unfortunately, but there should be some irons or others scattered.
Back, I guess

Yeah I walked NW for a good three or four Hours last night and ended up getting the words "No Minerals Found" Burned into my retina. I might head into the east this time and see what happens.

your four hours of walking is probably the equivalant of like 30 minutes in a boat. change that to 4 hours of boat travel and you may actually find a mine. you are not going to find anything walking anywhere....

do the following....

-find out what grid you are on
-head to the closest edge of the map with the possessions you can carry in your backpack (you are not comming back)
-keep traveling till you reach the out grids... walla, you find a mine.

In the hours of walking I also carried my boat with me on land so I could continue once I found a new lake or river, And I have absolutely no idea what grid I'm on, I checked the super map and none of the villages close to me are mapped on it. shit sux
