What exactly is breeding Quality?

I have this sneaky suspicion that it works a lot like beehives.

It is a soft cap on a calf's stats, based on the father's breeding quality only - it is recessive in the mother (but still used with the father's as mean stats for the calf).

how the hell is it a soft cap? Cuz it's definitely not a hard cap.

base stat = (father stat + mother stat)/2
base breeding = (father breeding + mother breeding)/2
if (base breeding < base stat) base stat = (base breeding + base stat)/2
actual stat = base stat -5/+20

At least that's my guess.
