VIRUS IN THE GAME!

Postby Greek2me » Wed Jun 30, 2010 3:25 pm

I recently installed the game, and soon after, Norton pops up and tells me it found 3 high risk viruses- ALL of them came from the folder that java installed the game to. I think somebody had better get explaining.

norton used to tell me EVERYTHING i had contained viruses, meanwhile it installed itself on 3 different locations on my laptop and repaired each one as i deleted it, and to even do that i had to use a program called unlocker so it would let me. after a few hours of struggling i finally managed to get rid of norton. seriously norton is a fucking piece of shit and most likely the worst virus out there. the only explaining needed here is why you are still using it

Sysadmin here, REMOVE THAT NORTON PIECE OF CRAP.

I've seen more computers ruined because of Norton than I have from viruses. I'd recommend Microsoft Security Essentials. http://www.microsoft.com/security_essentials/

Not that I don't agree, nor that I don't think all antivirus programs are crap, but there is something odd -- the client contains no file called "server1.class", and it really does sound like some kind of virus to me.

Since the client contains no such file, however, I would hardly think it is related to Haven; I would rather think it's something weird that you downloaded elsewhere.

Not that I don't ... think all antivirus programs are crap,

I've been running this XP installation for nearly two years without any antivirus, and I'm fine. I *might* have viruses, but if I do they don't affect the computer's performance and I don't have any sensitive information here, so I don't care.

Well, to begin with I don't use Windows. ;)

With XP SP2 and above, it is far less of a problem even with Windows, though. The firewall blocks all the remote-infestation kinds of worms like Sasser, and you can avoid the rest by not downloading Russian mobile porn. My family has three or four XP SP2/3 laptops, and all of them lack both viruses and A/V programs.

EDIT: As for my critique of Antivirus programs, it consists partly in the fact that they bog down a Windows computer to what seems like a third of its ordinary performance, while performing services that are, at best, only slightly helpful; and partly in their own behavior as crapware in various aspects, such as their "Warning! Your computer is not fully protected! It may explode unless you pay us protection money!" messages, or their apparent wish to be involved in every little aspect of the system (from filesystem scanning to browser plugins to mail scanning to phishing filters to firewall implementations and what not). Even if you were to catch a virus, formatting and reinstalling is a small price to pay for not having had to stand the A/V program in the meantime.

Common sense beats an antivirus every day of the week, however having one you can trust is fine as backup.

Then again I do have a safety precaution in that case, I keep all data on a second partition, dualboot to Ubuntu and clean it all then reinstall windows, although I've only had to do that once within the past 5 years...
