Don't be discouraged, the beginning of a world (this one started a week ago) is always chaotic and full of griefers. A month later and most of them get bored and are gone.

Here's a thread full of useful tips : http://www.havenandhearth.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=42&t=69950

I'll just put the Seatribe homepage here: http://www.seatribe.se/ ;)

I wish that worked. The longer someone lives in a spot, progressively harder it gets to move them. Beginners who don't understand the game easily get attached to their drying racks and their little claim. Asking them to move rarely works, and as they sit there their ability to refuse to move dramatically increases. Many players say no, and by the time you realize they aren't going to go you now have a massive pain in the butt on your hands.

Yes, this game caters a lot to sociopathic behavior.

Between EVE Online and this one I notice a common trend for this in Scandinavian-made games. Could have something to do with pent-up aggression from living under repressive socialist state, practicing forced social consensus.

Clearly they should do what the Americans do and let off some steam IRL by shooting up a school or something.

To OP...

Yes, H&H has a HUGE learning curve. When I first started I died over and over to griefers who never even tried talking to me. I learned to run away from everyone I saw (not exactly the right conclusion). I finally survived long enough to get a small claim and home just to die to a bear hiding behind trees. That taught me to get the clients (Ender has always been my go to) and hide trees. Finally, with a lot of help from the forums and the Ring of Brodgar wiki, I was able to really start playing. So if this kind of game is your thing, don't give up. It has always, in my humble opinion, been the best game of its kind. Being a carebear, I have looked for a very long time for a game that has all that H&H has to offer (without so much permadeath... lol) and have been found wanting every time. Sometimes this game makes you want to scream and cry but most of the time, it can be rewarding in so many different ways. Hope you stick around.
Sorry for the less common point of view, but it is the only one I have ;P

I know this thread is old, but...
First day I started this world (2 weeks ago?) I spent 6 hours meeting up with a friend and set up a small camp admittedly too close to a settlement. Logged on the next day to find my hearthfire destroyed by another player and myself on the other side of the world.

Two days ago I died because I was pathing back home in my boat and went afk during a long stretch of water to check on some veggies i was cooking IRL. Came back to find my character dead because I accidentally pathed right into a small stretch of deep ocean (Like 3 tiles)... I lost everything in my inventory and couldn't even bury my body. I wish player's skulls got added to the fishing pool so other people could pull them out of the water. That would be funny, except that you'd pull out more skulls than fish

not even 12 hours later, I died again because I got too close to a boar while I was pathing and alt + tabbed to check a discord message.

This is not an easy game at all. If you're still trying to play (I'm going to guess you quit), I have a few tips to get you started again.

1) Settle inland away from any water, and make sure you know the area well before you commit to anywhere. Stay away from settlements and natural resources at first. If players can't find you, they can't steal from you or kill you. The inconvenience is worth not having to restart all the time.

2) Just because you can doesn't mean you should. Don't stomp dirt or pave anything unless you're willing to accept that people will see you on the minimap. Don't start farming until you have a claim/Palisade. This just makes it worth raiding you. All of your good shit, keep it in your inventory when you log out unless you have somewhere to hide it. If you have a claim but look poor, regular players aren't usually going to bother you. If you have a palisade + claim and look broke as hell, almost nobody is going to bother you. If you have a palisade + claim and 80 cupboards outside on gold pavement, me and my uncle and my grandmother's friends are going to bother you.

3) Never AFK. Just don't. If you have to leave to do something, at least close the client.

4) Don't get upset if you fail. Remember that every time you die, you always get to keep: your claim, 15% of your previous character's stats, and of course whatever lessons you learned from dying. If you keep playing and keep making progress, eventually dying isn't as much of a setback as you think
