well, i found an unclaimed village and the residents haven't logged on in at most 24 weeks. do i claim it as my own or do i leave it in case they decide to come back?

man if they were logging in actively you could make a catapult and destroy their walls and kill them

so yes your peaceful solution and enterprising expansion is definitely an option and if they have more/better infrastructure than you, a good idea
