I was quite surprised when I started a few days ago (mind you I have no idea what I'm doing total noob) after I saw Nook's stream on this game and it looked fun but, ... now I'm not sure or did I miss some rule why this ok
I know this thread is old, but...
First day I started this world (2 weeks ago?) I spent 6 hours meeting up with a friend and set up a small camp admittedly too close to a settlement. Logged on the next day to find my hearthfire destroyed by another player and myself on the other side of the world.
Two days ago I died because I was pathing back home in my boat and went afk during a long stretch of water to check on some veggies i was cooking IRL. Came back to find my character dead because I accidentally pathed right into a small stretch of deep ocean (Like 3 tiles)... I lost everything in my inventory and couldn't even bury my body. I wish player's skulls got added to the fishing pool so other people could pull them out of the water. That would be funny, except that you'd pull out more skulls than fish
not even 12 hours later, I died again because I got too close to a boar while I was pathing and alt + tabbed to check a discord message.
This is not an easy game at all. If you're still trying to play (I'm going to guess you quit), I have a few tips to get you started again.
1) Settle inland away from any water, and make sure you know the area well before you commit to anywhere. Stay away from settlements and natural resources at first. If players can't find you, they can't steal from you or kill you. The inconvenience is worth not having to restart all the time.
2) Just because you can doesn't mean you should. Don't stomp dirt or pave anything unless you're willing to accept that people will see you on the minimap. Don't start farming until you have a claim/Palisade. This just makes it worth raiding you. All of your good shit, keep it in your inventory when you log out unless you have somewhere to hide it. If you have a claim but look poor, regular players aren't usually going to bother you. If you have a palisade + claim and look broke as hell, almost nobody is going to bother you. If you have a palisade + claim and 80 cupboards outside on gold pavement, me and my uncle and my grandmother's friends are going to bother you.
3) Never AFK. Just don't. If you have to leave to do something, at least close the client.
4) Don't get upset if you fail. Remember that every time you die, you always get to keep: your claim, 15% of your previous character's stats, and of course whatever lessons you learned from dying. If you keep playing and keep making progress, eventually dying isn't as much of a setback as you think
