I don't remember if devs have explicitly said it, but I'm under impression they want to break away from the mold of yearly resets.

They've always wanted to go for a fully persistent world and have always disliked resets from a design perspective. But with the game being what it is, regular resets are inevitable, and personally I think this is a fundamental issue and a truly persistent world is not possible (or rather, fun) without very radical changes to the game.

You may be referring to Jorb's recent post in "Are devs happy/okay/satisfied with the player numbers?":

I am concerned that recurring resets is an addiction that we're feeding which prevents any longer term commitments to the game.

Continued development is the best I've got.

I'm happy either way. I'd recommend treating it like a new world, Snail seems to have stopped killing people.

Honestly I prefer the current model over the idea of a persistent world. I (like many others) no-life the fuck out of this game every reset, until eventually I've had enough and other things start to take my attention, other games come out, movies, social events whatever. I go through cycles of playing certain games, like starting a new minecraft mod pack once per year (and almost never finishing it). For me personally, world resets are definitely an "addiction" as Jorb put it, but I don't think i'd play the game anywhere near as much and as frequently as I do if it wasn't for that tbh.

Haven has a unique make-up, sure it has flaws, but I don't think that a truely persistent game world is really feasible with zero marketting outreach in todays market. People only have so much of an attention span and other things going on, sure they might dip in and out, but if there is no drive at all to bring in new players, no marketting or platforms for it, then you have just that, the same recurring player base that goes in and out of wanting to play.

I think the only reason world 10 was such a success for so long was because it lasted long enough that the "level playing field" no longer mattered, because you could just buy a token and have a Q1000 anvil, saw, axe, hammer, scythe and whatever else, that and people joining 2 years in, all the "big players" had quit by that point anyway so it wasn't really an issue of huge factions dominating the map.

Salem has that truly persistent world. I've had an account there for years and there has never been a wipe. Development there is unfortunately non-existent, however.

I think H&H has adopted the wipe when the server pop becomes stagnant. The wipes are a good way to revitalize and get some interest back into the game (at least for a few months).

The one big negative about Haven I have is the quality grind, and I think that's what eventually gets people to quit. Shouldn't be as much about quality as it should be about building/crafting/exploring... =)
