Right now the world is trashed, and it's impossible to get the 'fresh world experience' even if you look for it.
With a couple of friends I've been trying to recreate a fresh world experience for ourselves. We encountered a bunch of issues:
- First things first: realms. Realms take up the majority of the map, and it took us over 20 new characters before spawning in "no man's land" (NML). Even then, we found ourselves limited to a very small portion of map, constantly ending up in some realm's land by simply going foraging nearby. With a few exceptions, most realms now give some kind of bonus you wouldn't have at the beginning, with some giving lots of them. To make things worse, realms don't really even care anymore about their lands; the fairly recent sabotage by Ebanumbia at the damage of HH is proof. Everyone was upset for a couple of days, but 4 months later nobody even tried reclaiming that land.
- Trail spam: the second issue we encountered, is the pure spam of trails. The map is trashed with them, and most are claimed so u can't remove them. Early game, there wouldn't be that many, if any at all. Worst thing? Most seem to be somewhat abandoned, but still claimed.
- Localised resources and NPCs: we found lots of resources and NPCs being walled off by closed palisades. While this happens kinda early too, right now it's even more annoying, given most owners are probably not even playing anymore (since most of those resources were ready to be harvested). Not to talk about all the trails leading to them.
- Early trade: with item Q going through the roof, and CF selling mid-high Q stuff for quite cheap, it's close to impossible to trade locally, especially low-q items. Not to talk about all the stuff you could simply recover from abandoned bases, which are everywhere. Early you are lucky if you snatch a couple of hides, now you find RoB and troll hides laying around in dead claims, without the need to commit crimes or siege claims.
- Cave system: if above ground it's hard to find some real wilderness, underground it's worse. Nearly all caves I've visited, including on a mountain, either have some huge underground base built inside or are spammed with support beams and linked all together by huge tunnels that cut through the entire map
- Insane quality: crops and items quality has reached insane levels. While you can try to ignore those, by avoiding trade and scavenging, you will still end up with some of those items popping in your inventory when you least expect it. From foraging on the beach, to fishing or digging, you'll end up finding some insane items by simply doing mundane stuff. Sure, you can throw them away...
Those are just some things that make the game feel old and trashed even to someone actively looking for the fresh-map experience. Sure you can limit yourself to specific areas, dump everything you didn't make, avoid scavenging or even grabbing a dead animal u find in the woods, and so on... but it shouldn't be that complex.
In my opinion there are three courses of action that would somewhat help solve these problems:
-1st. The reset. Easy, practical, it's not the perfect solution but it would refresh the clock and bring back lots of players. Sure, 6 months later most would be gone, but the map would still be in better shape than it is now.
-2nd. Map expansion. Making new ares accessible would allow for a real fresh start for whoever wants it, while still allowing others to keep their late-game things going. New players would have to spawn in the newly created ares. The only issue would be that those few players would be even more spread out. Not sure if doable.
-3rd. Increased decay. More like a patch than a solution, hugely increasing the rate at which claims and stuff decays would help. Make those pavements disappear in a few days, make those palisades drop in 36 hours if outside a claim, and make those claims decay faster. Make some kind of "earthquake" event that 'refills' tunnelled caves, or make beams decay and have caves collapse into solid rock.
Sure these are not perfect solutions, but I don't think there would be an easy one. The issue to solve here is simple: find a way to give new/returning players an actual fresh start. The solution is not so simple, especially if reset is off the table.
