A message to people who demand a new world.

Postby zebratul » Wed Jan 09, 2019 11:26 am

This was originally a single post in the «small announcement» thread, but then it got lenghty and i decided to create a separate one.

I personally find the «new world or riot» meme extremely obnoxious. There's no real reason to demand it right now — we are still waiting for the client rewrite and optimization, fep and questing balancing retouches, another potential combat rework and optimization.

There are also new features that would be nice to see in the new world that were promised/talked about (modular housing, walkable docks, bridges and extra features like that, all tied to object controlled objects rework).

The game is also extremely inaccessable to the new players. There are tonnes and tonnes of obscure game mechanics, a severe lack of up-to-date guides (working on updating my guides atm), and absolutely no way for people to learn about wiki and «How do I» section of the forum in the first place. Links to wiki and to the forum must be included in the starting quest, which itself should be expanded upon into the yeomanry part of the game: create a personal claim, build a house, build racks, dry WWWs and plant a farm, ride a wild horse by feeding it a clover, tame an animal by beating it up, etc etc. The current introduction quests just abruptly end after teaching the most basic and simple mechanics, hell, it doesn't even teach that you can rotate and delicately position items on tiles. I understand that learning and discovery is a huge part of the game, but there absolutly has to be some codex of things and mechanics that you can do to interact with the world. Without knowing how to interact with the world, it's impossible to learn new things.

There are also different bugs and exploits that are in the game for a long time which give massive advantage to any experienced players (hunting mammothes and cave life through palisades, taming/hunting through rocks and bushes (it's still viable), and many more i cant recall now or dont know). Only the most severe bugs and abuses, usually related to raiding, get fixed fast.
Lastly, there's a matter of releasing the game on bigger platform (think Wurm Infinite). It's possible for game of this scope, style and genre to be hosted on Steam, but it has to be more polished.

Without any actual new and valuable additions and fixes to the game, the next potential world would be just the same as this — insane quality race in the beggining, bots, abusers and people with knowledge running rampant, leaving noobs in the dust, culmitating in several big fights in the first months, then the losers of the race will quit, demanding the new reset again.

So, tl;dr: please, dont just spam every thread with this shit. World restart wont help neither core or current issues of the game.

Anyone spamming threads about anything may will end up in the penalty box. Just sayin'.

You literally just spammed a brand new thread with the same shit you are demanding we stop. Good on MagicMan for the quick merge.

There are many reasons to want a new world, it's not just a meme. This is the oldest world in the history of haven by about a year. Many people prefer the early game over the stale feeling of the late game. Many, many game changing updates have been made over the course of these 2 years, many things exploited, and many things that have more or less dictated who is currently "winning."

I think a lot of players want to start fresh and try the last 2 years of content with a fresh start and see how the game will change when people can develop their villages and kingdoms and strategies with the current state of things, because the current state of things are ridiculously different than they were 2 years ago when this current world began.

All in all I think that it's actually due time for a reset, and I only think this because I can only assume that if we were to start now the next world would progress no differently than this current one has. Big changes throughout the course of the world that we would all have to adapt to as they are rolled out.

There is no real reason to wait an additional year for game changing mechanics to me implemented when we just had 2 years of them.

I think w7 lasted about 1 and 3/4 years before we got new haven. However in that 2 year time period they literally created a brand new haven game WHILE still actively developing Salem on a very regular basis. A lot of people were trying out Salem or playing both at once and no new development was being rolled out for legacy.

All the more reason for a wipe of this current iteration

W6 was not quite 2 years IIRC*. W7 started June 2013. World 8 started August 2015. World 10 started Jan 2017. The 7th was the two year anniversary.

*I don't see the dates on the wiki. I'd have to dig through the archives to confirm the announcement, but it was put up during early Salem development due to catastrophic data issues with world 5 that was closed after less than six months. Doing some rough estimates, that was around August or September of 2011.

New world will bring more Hearthlings online again. Like other people said some people prefer early/mid world more than late, and while this game is beautiful enough to (somehow) make it happen, I can only be a retired hearthling for so long before I get sad :(.

More players = better
