I have 16 rustroots.

What do you have to offer?

If you just started, you won't find a mine. Period.

All the areas that a newly made character can reach without drowning or getting mauled to death by wild animals has been picked clean for mining spots, and now they all have mines operating out of them.

Welcome to H&H. The dev's have decided that rare and localized resources add a more meaningful economy to the game and encourage player interaction.
Don't be too put off by metal's apparent scarcity, it's actually pretty easy to do most things in the game without it, and if you're prepared to do a bit of work it's not that hard to get enough trade goods to earn yourself some.
