Let's be real, if you quit the game after getting murdered as a spruce cap, chances are you are going to be equally fickle with any number of hardships you will face down the road. Please, can we have one challenging game, with stakes, that doesn't cater to the lowest common denominator. If you want easy, riskless progression, go play basically any other online game. Haven is too janky to compete with those anyway. Let it do what it does best. Survival and progression in a risky, challenging world.
Now, if you want to deter outright griefing of noobs for the sake of griefing, maybe a mechanic like 'Smoldering Soul' from jumping into the flame at creation, which provides a decaying buff for like 3-7 days. Any player that doesn't also have that buff, who kills such a player, gets a wound "Soul Burn" or some shit, that bricks your character like a bad concussion. To prevent exploiting this buff, maybe it is only provided to the first character created on an account, and then perhaps only accounts with a subscription

. Taking rage could also remove the buff to prevent its use for boosted combat alts. Plus any number of additional criteria to prevent its exploitation.
You still have the freedom to grief if you are really dedicated to it, the noob still has to worry about getting griefed, but probably less blasé noob-slaughtering overall. Just don't get your boat sunk. Additionally, regarding the dev's stance on PvP vis-a-vis avoiding "the air is free", nothing keeps you from KO'ing said noob all you want without penalty.
