Novigard Tutorial. The Reason for delays...

Postby Nogetsu » Tue Dec 22, 2009 11:27 am

As some of you may know. I am attempting to construct a self sufficient Tutorial at Novigard that will allow new players to learn nearly everything they will need to play the game while only leaving them with the bear essentials to start their lives as Farmers/Hunters/Cooks/Good Hearthlings. The reason for lack of Miners/Smiths is naturally cause there is No mine at Novigard...

Anyway. There are a two reasons for the Delays that have occurred to stop or decrease my ability to play...

1: I have recently got a new job that has demanded a large percentage of my time to be committed to, especially around the Christmas Period. With 9Hr Shifts at work with a Half Hour Drive to and from, (excluding the fact I have to wait for my LPlate Supervising Drive to come get me). This hampers my play time to only a few hours or even none at all depending on how hectic the day has been...

2: The Recent Grifeing... Last Month or so I requested Potjeh to seal the Charterstone so unless he has reopened it without informing me, there have been NO new players visiting Novigard. Yet the area is constantly being changed by players. While some I can understand, like Newish Players knowing that when they have little food they could duck back to Novigard for some Pumpkin or such. BUT with the recent Ravaging of the Farm Fields, and the Wasted Materials that had been harvested, such as Wood from the Forests, Leather and Seeds themselves. I have been pushed backwards. Even today in the morning before work I came onto HnH and saw someone Ravaging the fields I had replanted, I only saw them for a moment before they disappeared due to the lag I experience at Log in. I also discovered that a Loom that took a while to get down into the Celler had been removed and taken a good distance away from the Cabin, not to include the Cupboard I found out there too. Lag killed the Loom as I attempted to return it to its rightful place...

I Write this to do two things, one is to inform those that I will still be attempting to build this Tutorial. But the second thing I am doing is asking a question or two...

Who are you that is moving/harvesting the stuff around the Tutorial Village.
Do you know what is happening there.
Do you want to stop this from being finished.
Why are you doing it...

And Finally. To the Community...

Should I stop this all together and give up...?

I say keep going as long as you can stand the annoyance of some people, I could have done with a tutorial when I started (hell I still could do with one really even after a fairly intensive week of existance) and if I didn't know some people from b12 when I started up who gave me pointers then I probably wouldn't still be here.

I would give up and start playing for yourself. Why invest time and resources into something someone is just going to come along and fuck it up in a few days? Stop tryign to wade against the tide. The best thing you can do for new players is just be there to answer questions. Build your own area with pallisades near the charter stone and people will see you working and ask you questions. You've already noted that %90 of the nubs ignore your runestones. But that's just how I would personally adjust my own play style. Because then, every day, you can toss a few excess seeds into some baskets outside your claim. Newbies can take themm it'll be expected and if they need more or there are more they can come by and ask you and you can put up some runestones.

Last but not least You can make a writing using grass or tile or some such saying 'Read the Goddamn runestones already, nub"
Well what is this that I can't see
With ice cold hands takin' hold of me
Well I am death, none can excel

Hello there Nogetsu

I am one of the first newbies that came thru Novingrad.

I am the one that planted that big field of hemp, i am sorry if it disturbed your plans up there in any way but i didnt want to see them go to waste.
if the field is plowed i can plant new hemp there next time i harvest, might be tonight.

I can also donate my old loom, if needed, i was about to destroy it anyway.

Usually i put seeds and other things in to the baskets in the charity pile when i pass by, but they seam to be used by someone, but ill try to keep putting stuff in there whenever i can.

other then that my only reason for returning to Novingrad is to get good ql branches from the apple tree, plant trees and keep an eye out for cows :D ohh and not to forget i like to check in from time to time to see how the tutorial aria is comming along. There is really a huge difference from when i started there he he :) keep up the good work. i know i would have appriciated it a lot as a newb, to be meet by something else then just a short road and a big nothingness, i was lucky to find a nice person to help me at the particular time i arrived to novingrad, i became hes neighur later on, otherwise i would probably have stopped playing rather quickley.

If you need seeds, just give me a hollar, im a farmer so i usually got plenty, just need to get myself a Scythe and i might get a little more time over for other things aswell.

Well... Duh. You created a n00bie town, you made people start there. If those people learn farming; know there are crops there for seeds they can harvest; available wood and what-not; then where do you think people are going to setup and / or go back to when they want stuff? Of course the area is going to constantly change and it won't just be the people who joined yesterday doing it. It'll be the people who joined a few weeks / month ago.

I think too much is being blamed on "griefers". Griefers are experience players deliberately going there to mess your shit up with no purpose other than to piss you off. I really don't think there are that many people here with nothing better to do than cut-down some worthless trees and harvest some worthless crops just to piss you off.

If it's not claimed; expect it to go. We had one of our guys start de-foresting whole areas because "you get LP that way!". The only thing that changed that was when we pointed out pottery was a better gain for less mass destruction and ruined animal spawn. Note that we needed people who knew how hunting worked and were online in order to convey that information.

I can still remember the first week when I started. I looked for a spot to settle and then for fields to grow. So what do you do? Well, you go to where you know they are. Pretty much any area around Brodgar that had unclaimed farms, me and another guy harvested. We figured we needed all the farms we could get... and re-plant them? We didn't even think about it at only got 2 seeds a pop. We raided local unclaimed farms for these big items we didn't understand how to make but thought we needed (herbalist tables; looms; beehives :P ). We realise now how retarded that was (having a loom without the skill is a bit derpderpderp and getting wool isn't all that hard... Once you know where Sheep spawn and why to make yarn or how to get plant fibres).

They're n00bs dude. I'm surprised Novigrad hasn't already turned into the giant clusterfuck that Brodgar is. You should be too.

A simple rule: If it's not on claimed land; it will be harvested; taken; moved; destroyed; used by someone who just simply doesn't know any better.

Nogetsu wrote:And Finally. To the Community...

What are you trying to accomplish?

1. Getting n00bs to learn? Update the wiki with useful tutorials.

2. Give them seeds so they can plant their own farms? Well, expect the farms you plant to be strip harvested. Just keep your own walled in and claimed area for seed supplies. Use those to re-plant fields in the unclaimed public area whenever you notice they're gone.

3. Have a starting location that's not a complete clusterfuck? Well, time and many people will fuck anything over. If you want forests; you will need to re-plant them (just like re-planting the farms). Otherwise, start cycling through starting locations. Setup four or five n00bie towns that you open and close as you re-stock each one.

I think what you're trying to do is commendable but you don't seem to understand the n00bie mind. Your best bet is simply to write generic tutorials; point out people can boat around and look for wild crops. ANd if you want to help more than that by actually providing a "n00bie resource bank" then you are going to be in for a lot of work.

GODDAMNED SAVE BUTTON WHY THE HELL WOULD I EVER WANT TO SAVE A DRAFT YOU STUPID GODDAMNED.... /Hits submit instead.

Allright Nogetsu, i just threw 2 strawbaskets with different seeds, and my old loom on to Novingrad claimed aria so you can dispose them in the way you think is best. :)
didnt have any pumpkinseeds tho, unlucky enough i had just reeplanted them yesterday and they take quite some time to grow up.

this would help me a lot, i have no clue what eel gives for example and couldn't get anyone to answer in the chat. noobs can help themselves if they can get the info. alot of the quality formulas are on the forums in posts, but are not found on the wiki either.

Eels give agility between q2 and q10

In higher levels most likely agility and int mixed.

They take up two vertical slots in inventory unlike all the other fish which take one slot or horizontal slots.

There is some information on the main page for fish in the wiki.
