The mine would have to be in the new grids because almost every mine in the older grids is taken. But newbs wont be able to travel to rob or anywhere else to trade, so what a mine be good for. It would also be hard for them to get out because the animals will be lvl IX or X.

Why getting out? You can buy the food there, maybe there's a well or river near, a palisade around to avoid a noob massacre
When you get tired of mining you gather the metal you did not spend and go away
Only problem is how to get there

Well, if you have a charter stone and a signpost to allow noobs to start there, it won't be too big a problem, I bet.
Surprise.

I would like to introduce somthing that my friend did not.

My in game char. is Jawahunter, and we are part of an organization called the IRA.

Make you laugh? IRA stands for the Irken Recycling Agency, and were a group thats been playing for a little while. A group of RL friends having some fun. This public mine that were thinking about is off the main supergrid, somthing to introduce players to the game. Like Novigrad, the charter stone would have help runes around it, and our nearby village of Moria would get the levels of the local wildlife a bit lower. I wont say where, because I dont want to give any greifers any ideas. But the IRA would run the mine, and the area around it. We would claim the area near it so nobody can claim the mine itself, but we would provide a start for new players. Like Brodgar, it would branch out as new players learned the game, and expanded claims of their own. As far as trade goes...well I believe an open ended area like this would let players start in a place where you already have critical resources avalible, and there is a large river system nearby that branches in many different directions. Trade wouldnt focus around Brodgar anymore, but rather at the Charter stone and evolve like Brodgar did. We are willing to trade with any groups that would like a supply of Iron on hand, and help is always appreciated. Once we expand a bit more, the charter stone will be up.

For the record, I think that the fact that newbs can't port to RoB from there is a *good* thing. Devs have made it clear that in the future the world won't be so centralized. I think it's better to find any problems now, than to have them sprung upon us come next reset.

Anyway, I commend your effort, guys, and wish you best of luck.

Once you can set it so some how mines on village land can be used by people who spawned through the charter stone, there will be a public mine.
Until then there is no proper way to do it that won't result in it being claimed.

Not true, AS long as the village authority surrounds, but does not claim the mine itself, then while an occaisional griefer might throw down a claim, it's a minor expenditure of authority to knock the claim back off.

EDIT - in fact, carefully placed authority can probably make the mine unclaimable by providing no room for non village members to put a stake up.

Also, I like this idea. OPs should contact me in IRC. I would donate some banners and maybe some other things to make this happen.

I've noticed that claims can't be very close to each other. A good samaritan could place a claim which is right next to the mine, but does not cover it at all. I believe the Q 97 dirt on the central supergrid is done this way. You wouldn't even have to deal with village authority.
