Not to be bitter about this or anything, but to a new player who has only one dream and wants another one so they can make a dowsing rod, that ball of yarn could be more valuable than the sword is to a player who is grinding metal. There may not be any sheep in their area, and the yarn may have cost them some hefty trading all so they can actually build a dreamcatcher.
So far as I am concerned if the thief choses a thief career then there is no reason they shouldn't pay the penalty for it. It's very clearly in the rules that all objects on a claim are covered by this. The dev's could have set it up so that only weapons, or items with q above 50, or items that are gold and silver leave theft scents. They didn't.
But the way I figure if a thief is roleplaying a character who is not too antisocial, I'm personally willing to let them live. In other words someone who sneaks in and grabs a couple of skeins of silk or half a dozen silk eggs is going to get my grudging admiration for their balls. If they sneak in and take nothing but my one most valuable object they have my great respect. But someone who comes in and cleans a player out of their entire silk production industry is making the game unpleasant. It's thieves like that who make the game less fun to play. IMHO this player _is_ a thief, they are not just roleplaying one. There's nothing wrong with exterminating theives who play the second way.
There are also theives who, when raiding a claim dump stuff methodically as they go. They may just be trying to get containers to haul off the booty, I suppose, but I'm inclined to class this kind of players as a simple griefer... and again, IMHO it is doing the game a disservice when they are allowed to live. They don't contribute anything. Their goal is not competition with other players, but to destroy another real person's playing experience.
