To all citizens of New Brodgar
I have taken the initiative of setting aside some land west of the square on the new road for at tree reserve. I hope Nano, Cookie and John are cool with this, but I wanted to take this step while I was online at the same time as Nomad (our new reserve steward), and before any of the newly available land was taken up.
Here is the deal (subject to change if Cookie/John desire)
A 2 by 2 plot area is going to be developed as a tree reserve. The total space will be 45x45. 20x20 of this space belongs to the steward, who will claim the rest of the area. In this case, our first steward is Nomad, until he gets tired of it.
Keys will be copied when possible down the road, and vandalism permission organised, so that people who need to can have constant access. We might place some basic charge on issuing the keys.
In the rest of the land, trees will be planted. This will have two aspects.
- Firstly, the steward may plant/harvest trees as s/he pleases for his/her own profit. This is their reward for looking after the area.
- Secondly, providing there are fully grown trees available, any citizen who brings a potted tree will be able to harvest a tree immediately for their own use. We may need to request that decent Q potted tree is required for decent Q tree.
The idea is this. If a person knows that by growing a potted tree, they can turn it in for immediate wood, they have a much bigger incentive than planting trees in an area open for anybody else to come along and benefit from that persons effort. It assures some return on your investment. Hopefully this area will assure decent Q wood, and even bulk construction wood, for the future demands of New Brodgar. I guess we can consider this a test. If the program is successful, we can expand it as and when necessary.
