what if a 3x3 were 2:1, a 4x4 4:1 A 5X5 8:1 ETC.

or some prograssive scale of investment. You'll then have a choice to conserve on HQ bricks or village space.

Now that's 180 bricks for a 3x3 roughly. So I'm not advocating this scale, just the idea of progressively expensive efficiency infrastructure

Would also make you more likely to build one series of Hi Qual, Lo Yield ovens, and another row of Lo Qual, Hi Yield equipment.

Exactly, life is about choices! Low yield for that pain in the ass awesome food and the cheap shit for the mass production shit like pumpkin pies
