I'm not sure if its based on fear, or its a flaw with the global community base, or what it is, but coupled with the learning cruve it almost seems like the only people who stick out the first few months are aggressive griefers looking for a game where superlatively anti-social conduct is still acceptable. What's more, there doesn't seem to be a way to change things, or reason with the pack-gankers of all languages.
By the end of World 3 (which is when I started playing, you can see my account 'born on' date there) there was no one left but the cooperative players, at least not that I ever encountered. Decline may be progressive. I never died in world three, everyone I met, regardless of language, was either friendly or at least warily neutral. I didn't have a palisade. I left a basket out front with food in it for travellers. I was never even tresspassed. In world four I was tresspassed and robbed multiple times, and murdered 3-4 times. I still had the basket out. I never owned anything metal, and it was clear I was just a farmer. I built a palisade and hardly ever left it. The friendliest people I met were Russians, and the people who moved in across the river (who were Canadians) were awesome and we made friends rather then trying to kill each other.
So far in world five, i'm still a farmer. I went out of my way to travel to the middle of nowhere, build a palisade with a small claim and I hide. People moved in after me, around the area, but no one closer then about 6 screens. Yesterday I found a 'you have 2 days to move' message outside my palisade gate, inside my claim. Its high 30 soil and a q 10 well. Really? What's the point? I'm waiting to see how that pans out. No one has even bothered to talk to me. When the heavily armed and armored people outside the walls see me inside the walls they literally run when I say hello. Maybe they fear reason? I'm not sure.
TL;DR, right?
The point is, this is a great game but its going to have a hard time making the creators money (and it should because its one of the deepest, most innovative games i've seen around and i've played a lot of them, starting with UO in 97...which makes me helluva old!) until it can draw and keep a playerbase that wants more then to burn down their neighbor's house, murder him and rape the corpse. Real World Georgraphical Orientation doesn't seem to factor much in the violence.
