Don't forget sling quality is softcapped by survival, too.

Half a screen is easily visible and within a very short walk of the river. So yes, save up materials for a palisade and make your self a smaller base further inland some place new :)

Very great guide, thank you very much.
Are there any more immediately gratifying ways to collect LP aside from Studying? I am ok with it but it's really boring waiting between studies to continue progressing my skills.

When can I begin fighting a bear? Myself and five friends all have hunting so we can use slings; We only have one sling in our possession currently though.
My friend has UA (not sure how high) and he fought a fox, got himself killed (thought it was hilarious over ventrilo. "Ohgod ohgod wtf fox killing me ohgod can't run away ohgodohgodohgod why did I do that") so I assume for now we are fairly wimpy and need to rely on choking our chickens. ;)
I don't know everything. Just what I know.

Not really... the discovery LP dries up pretty quickly ;). There are plenty of things you can do while waiting though - building your settlement, farming, mining, hunting, foraging for more curios... (or real life ;))

You can begin slinging bears from a boat with ~10MM, but be aware you will need a looong time to kill it ;). If there are 5 of you, make it a priority to get more slings, and then gang up on the bear.

You probably need ~40UA to fight a fox, and make sure you start off by gaining some IP against it (I think it has some skill which it can use only if you have no IP). Otherwise sling it from a boat. If you can, trap it against the coast with signs, because they will run away once their health gets low. NB they can break signs if moving to attack, but not if they are fleeing... so don't rely on signs to protect you from them, just to stop them running!

Check out the combat guide stickied in this forum. If you know your skills and have purchased the majority of them, you can defeat a fox with about 25-30 UA. Ants make good practice at this point as they won't be able to easily kill you, but you'll still take a few hits if you forget to change maneuvers.

Bears won't run if the dps against them is low enough. One or two people with low quality slings won't produce enough to chase them off. However, I can make one run with a q30-40 sling by myself.

It seems to be at about Q30 sling and 35ish MM that you'll start seeing bears run. I put the DPS required to be somewhere around 80-90 damage per minute, but there does seem to be a random factor involved. Mainly I say this because about 90 damage on the first hit is what's required to make it run off the start.

Edit: Want to apologize to everyone on the lack of editing of late. My in game life has been hectic due to raiding and losing several valuable members of my village (hopefully temporarily).

Going to sticky this. Even if not finished people use it alot and link it all the time, so it shouldn't be found down on page 3.
