well, i think someday this game will have Horses, Caravans, Ships, Sea, more mountains....a little world.
....uhhh..........little wooorld........ *slurp*

Anyway, i fear is early for create seas. Ther's need a border line of the lands. River that find a sense, starting from a mountain and end on the sea. And all those stuffs.
Someday i hope.. Yeah..!
But is not so fast to do. Create a sea grid is nonsense. They should use the lakes, maibe, to add some biiig fish that move the water and do "splash" XD

An ocean is much easier to add than to generate rivers that make sense. Why do you say that it's nonsense?

i think add an ocean, need that the world is bigger than now. And he should also have cool coast, continents. Yes, they can put a grid of water with fishes and stop it...but it make me think that a lots of thing should be implemented to have a ocean with a logic.

You walk, meet an ocean, across the ocean and then..nohing, you knock the line of the end of the game. Maibe is better wait, to have a loopable world, a continets more studied or stuff like this. It only depends on what purpose the boss have.

A square of water can be done when you want, sure.

well wed definitely want working sails beforehand.

can you imagine how incredibly tiresome it would be having to mouseclick to your destination across an ocean?

in fact you might even want to wait for a more advanced and less random worldgen before oceans, one that took all sorts of things into account like tectonics and currents and weather

otherwise itd just be more rorschachs, which honestly arent as thrilling to explore

a Ship maibe could work differently. You click the direction to take and the ship keep going the same direction until you change it. Like if you adjust the rudder and the ship go forward until you drop the Anchor.

That is an awesome idea. I want boats to work like this now.

Also, if you could sail across it then it wouldn't be much of an ocean. Although the vikings did reach Greenland in oar boats. Should probably have the farthest tiles be impassable and yell at you "you do not dare move farther out into the sea as you are losing sight of the shore."

Shameless necro:

If an actual sea is too much, the local waters should at least be made more interesting. What if the lakes had natural residents that swam around like the land-based animals run on land? I have two specific mythical examples that could even be made to work while being abstracted away as an extremely rare fishing encounter.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vodyanoy

To make boat travel a little bit less safe, a mythical river spirit can sometimes pop up and attack you. If it wins, you're knocked out and lose some of your HHP, but are left alone, unless the HHP damage is fatal. If you win, you may get an artifact ceramic cup for your trouble, drinking out of which could have some cool effects.

The player could maybe even use some of his wyrd and a few pieces of cured tobacco to perform the "fishing ritual", which would allow the player to fish anywhere; even in spots without a fish resource, by calling on a favor of the Vodyanoy/Wodnik/Wassermann/Nix.

Here's another interesting creature:
"Russian fairy tales, on the other hand, also tell about an old wise pike that can fulfil wishes of the one who catches it, if its catcher releases it back into its habitat.

In the beginning of Boris and Arkady Strugatsky Monday Begins on Saturday a wise centuries-old pike appears in the story when main character Sasha arrives at Baba Yaga's house in Solovets." ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Esox )
A bar of wrought iron (at QL of the fish) for capturing and releasing a special and extremely rare pike? How did the game know my wishes!!?

Perhaps an idea for this would be to create a second world based on the sea idea with islands instead of a large continent, and long range navigation using self made charts and compass
If ignorance were bliss, then why aren't there more happy people in the world?

Flame's addition sounds great. Simplified sailing could be achieved with (wind direction, wind strength) nodes. Nodes which would work as current soil QL and similar. That way, those who sail must stay focused and adjust rudder and sails appropriately if they want to keep the direction.
Ships bigger than boat should receive some damage if they reach shore in full speed. So, it becomes fun to sail as it is easy but you must stay focused and harness the winds.
